ActionAid Association (India) welcomes applications for its fully funded, 7 day residential course on “Urbanizing North-East India: Interrogating Questions of Sustainable Economic Development” for urban practitioners, city planners, activists, researchers etc.

This course will attempt to build a holistic perspective by looking at the macro aspects of the global scenario and connecting the impact on India specifically to the North East region of the country.

About the Urban Action School -:

The Urban Action School (UAS) is a school for mid to senior level urban practitioners specialising in issues related to Urbanisation and Cities, related to India and the Global South. The UAS has been a successful conduit of cutting-edge knowledge on contemporary themes on Urban for activists, researchers, development and policy professionals. Participants get an opportunity to interact and learn from specialised resource persons/sectoral experts. The unique teaching methodology facilitates cross-pollination of ideas and experiences between the participants and resource persons.

The curriculum for each UAS course is designed in collaboration with knowledge partners to include the most recent intellectual and social developments in the field.

Eminently knowledgeable resource persons are invited with a keen eye on their ability to communicate complex theoretical and policy ideas in accessible language and form.

The design of the sessions ensures that there is active engagement between the participants and the resource persons. At times, day-long sessions have also been organized with a single resource person for deep mutual learnings.

Programme Overview:

The issue of urban development in the North East India draws attention to the problems of social, political, economic and cultural engineering on a diverse society. This week-long intensive course, “Urbanizing North-East India” will attempt to build a holistic perspective by looking at the macro aspects of the global scenario and connecting the impact on India specifically to the North East region of the country. The course will examine alternative development models and solutions and try to identify means to achieve a decent and dignified life for people.

Themes of the UAS 2018

The following themes will be discussed in the course-:

  • Urbanization, Rural - Urban Continuum and changing land relations
  • Unpacking the Smart City discourse
  • Urban Commons
  • Environment Issues in North East and its impact on people and development    
  • Conflicts arising due to New economic paradigm              
  • Patriarchy, Gender and the women’s movement            
  • Migration and livelihoods              

Eligibility Criteria for Participation-:

  • Individuals/organizations working with community organizations, social movements, lawyers, journalists, researchers, urban local bodies, media persons, government officials, research students, social workers, elected peoples’ representatives working on issues and concerns pertaining to development are eligible to apply for this course.
  • Individuals with at least three or more years of experience of working on issues of urbanisation.
  • Participants have to compulsorily stay in the provided lodging facility for the entire duration of the course.
