Meeting the learning needs of  leaders and experts in the USAID health sector

In 2005, USAID’s Bureau of Global Health developed the Global Health eLearning (GHeL) Center to provide its worldwide mission-based health staff with access to state of the art technical global health information.

The courses and certificate programs at the Center offer self-paced Internet-based courses that:

  • Provide useful and timely continuing education for the world’s premier global health professionals
  • Present state-of-the-art technical content on key public health topics
  • Serve as a practical resource for increasing public health knowledge

 

Benefitting the entire international health community

The primary audience for the Learning Center is health sector staff at USAID missions around the world. Staff at USAID/Washington, at cooperating agencies (CAs), and other partners also benefit from the eLearning Center. Registration is easy and free – brought to you by USAID and the American people.

 

A flexible learning program for busy professionals
Each course is authored by a subject matter expert or a team of experts, is highly focused, and can be completed in about one to two hours. Learners can access a course in multiple visits and a pick up where they left off at any time. Although courses are designed to be taken online, a printer-friendly format allows you to download and print course materials for further study. Some titles are available in languages other than English. Learners can complete individual courses, or a series of related courses as part of a Certificate Program.

 

A blend of technical and programmatic content
The courses combine technical content with current USAID programming principles, best practices, and case studies. Concrete examples stimulate a learner’s thinking so that they can to solve problems and apply best practices to programming in the field setting. The Center offers the best of international development implementation science for the health sector.

Course: Geographic Approaches to Global Health

It is important to harness geography to manage, analyze, and leverage spatial data effectively when planning, monitoring, and evaluating health sector programs. Through this course, learners will gain an understanding of how to use spatial data to enhance the decision-making process for health program implementation in limited resource settings.

 

Objective
By the end of this course, the learner will – within a public health context – be able to:

  • Understand the basics of spatial data and its role in decision making
  • Explain why geographic data and tools are important for decision makers
  • Understand geography as a unifying framework and GIS as a tool to collect, link, analyze, visualize, manage, and share data and information
  • Address the challenges and explore the opportunities of working with spatial data to produce geographic information and geographically based knowledge
  • Distinguish between the different tools used to collect, analyze, and manipulate geographic data
  • Communicate with technical specialists to develop program-specific geographic products
