Call for Post-doctoral Fellow for Project “Philosophy in Action”

National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) was conceived and founded in 1988 by the late Mr. J. R. D. Tata, who sought to create an institution to conduct advanced multidisciplinary research. Housed in a picturesque green campus in Bangalore the Institute serves as a forum to bring together individuals from diverse intellectual backgrounds, in the natural and life sciences, humanities, social sciences, and conflict and security studies. The philosophy underlying NIAS is given shape by its multidisciplinary research teams. The Institute is unique in its integrated approach to the study of intersections between science and technology, philosophy, social issues and leadership. The objective is to nurture a broad base of scholars, managers and leaders who would respond to the complex challenges that face contemporary India and global society, with insight, sensitivity, confidence and dedication. Philosophy as an idea as well as a discipline in NIAS has a long history, right from its inception. Through the initiative of a project titled “Philosophy in Action: Creating Public Citizenship”, supported by the Tata Trusts, the Philosophy Programme has continued this tradition of making philosophy meaningful to the society. This project is an effort to create public resources for philosophy, intervene in teaching philosophy right from schools to the larger public, create online resources which will enable easy access to both Indian and contemporary philosophy, publish books in philosophy for children and general readership, and so on.

Applications are invited for a full time post-doctoral fellowship based at NIAS as part of the project "Philosophy in Action: Creating public citizenship" (supported by the Tata Trusts) under Prof. Sundar Sarukkai.

The selected candidate will have to work towards the objectives of the project, which include creating resources for public access to philosophy through books, workshops, website and other online forums, and teaching in different fora such as schools and colleges. The postdoctoral fellow will also be expected to work on her/his individual research work. The fellowship is for a period of one year, extendable to the second year following evaluation at the end of the first year. Students who have a PhD in Philosophy, Humanities or Social Sciences can apply. For students with a non-philosophy degree, their PhD work must have drawn on philosophy extensively.

The deadline for receiving applications is 30 June 2018. Short-listed candidates will be invited to NIAS for a presentation followed by an interview.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and comparable to other premier institutions in the country.
