About the project

Are you interested in studying rapidly changing Indian cities? Would you like to explore the lives of migrant workers who build and maintain cities and their relationships to the urban environment? How do urban planning and real estate developments reshape migrant lives? Do they redefine relationships with essential resources like water and air?

Western Sydney University is seeking a dynamic doctoral candidate eager to undertake the rigors of ethnographic fieldwork and dissertation writing. The scholar should be interested in addressing contemporary debates in urban anthropology, informal economies and environment.

What does the scholarship provide?

  • Domestic candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $30,000 per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs, supported by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset.
  • International candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $30,000 per annum to support living costs. Those with a strong record will be eligible for a tuition fee waiver.
  • All international candidates are required to hold an Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC) policy covering the duration of their studies in Australia, and the Institute for Culture and Society will cover the cost of this insurance (single policy only).
  • Support for conference attendance, fieldwork and additional costs as approved by the Institute for Culture and Society.

Eligibility criteria

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds, who are interested in urban anthropology. In particular, the project is suitable for candidates with strong interests in informal work, migration and cities.The successful applicant should:

  • hold qualifications and experience equal to one of the following (i) an Australian Bachelor (Honours) degree, (ii) coursework Masters with at least 25% research component, (iii) Research Masters degree, or (iv) equivalent overseas qualifications, in the fields of anthropology, sociology and social sciences.
  • demonstrate strong academic performance in subjects relevant to urban anthropology, ethnography and informal work.
  • have an understanding of the importance of current debates on urban and environmental transformations.
  • be enthusiastic and highly motivated to undertake rigorous fieldwork and have high proficiency in the languages required for fieldwork.
