About Lamp Fellowship:

The Legislative Assistants to Members of Parliament (LAMP) Fellowship was conceptualized by PRS to create a platform for young Indians to engage with policy making at the national level. The LAMP Fellowship started on a pilot basis in 2010 in collaboration with the Constitution Club of India.

The LAMP Fellowship provides an opportunity for young Indians to be mentored by a Member of Parliament. The LAMP Fellows work full time with the assigned MP for a period of eleven months, from the beginning of the Monsoon session to the end of the Budget session of Parliament. Throughout the eleven months, the LAMP Fellow works closely with the MP, providing extensive research support for his/her parliamentary work.

Duration of the program: 11 months 

Stipend: 20000 

Eligibility:

PRS seeks to engage with highly-motivated, bright young people for the LAMP Fellowship.

  • LAMP Fellowship is open to candidates born on or after June 1, 1992
  • Candidate must have at least a Bachelor's degree in any academic discipline.
  • Only Indian citizens are eligible for the LAMP Fellowship.

 Role as a LAMP Fellow:

  • Extensive research support to help MPs fulfill their parliamentary duties such as asking questions, raising matters of public importance, participating in debates, writing speeches, drafting private member Bills, among others.
  • LAMP Fellows will also engage with policy makers and experts from diverse sectors through participation in workshops on important policy and development issues.
  • During the intersession period, workshops are conducted on subjects like Health, Education, Infrastructure, Public Finance, etc
  • LAMP Fellows are expected to brief the MP on a regular basis, based on the research they conduct. Fellows are expected to meet the MP regularly to understand his research needs for work in Parliament.
  • LAMP Fellows research topics as diverse as defense, food security, environment, economics and foreign affairs.
  • Research tasks may include:
    • Legislative research
    • Analyzing data
    • Framing parliamentary Questions
    • Background research parliamentary debates
    • Research for committee meetings
    • Drafting Private Member Bills
    • Research for constituency-related issues
    • Interacting with stakeholders
    • Media-related work including drafting press releases, preparing interventions for TV appearances. 

Selection Process: 

  • The LAMP Fellowship involves a highly competitive selection process to enable brilliant, motivated young individuals across the country to be part of the Fellowship.
  • Only Indian citizens are eligible for the LAMP Fellowship. Applications to the Fellowship are invited through an online application portal only.
  • The online application form requires details of the candidate's academic background, relevant work experience and references.
  • In addition, candidates are required to submit a statement of intent on what motivates them to be a LAMP Fellow and a short essay on a policy or legislative issue.
  • The application process is followed by an interview of shortlisted candidates. Interview will be either in person or telephonic. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to furnish references. Note than any attempt to influence the selection process could lead to the disqualification of the candidate.
