The post holder will be part of a wider teaching team delivering the British Council's blended learning courses in India. The purpose of this job is:

1.To prepare and deliver quality teaching and effective learning of English, via face to face and virtual classroom, and as an e-moderator of self-access learning  

2.To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission



LOCATION Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Coimbatore
SALARY Hourly rate
DURATION One year (renewable)
WORKING HOURS Flexible working week with some irregular hours

You will deliver face to face classes in your city and conduct online classes and e-moderation from home or from the offices of BC Examinations and English Services India Private Limited (if present in your city).  The post holder may be required to travel elsewhere in India to receive training and deliver face-to-face teaching.

Blended Learning India

The British Council India Blended learning business launched in May 2015 with our myEnglish courses in Pune. In 2016, myEnglish courses were also launched in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Students complete a self-access course online, guided by a moderator (teacher). They upload weekly tasks to a virtual learning environment, where they receive feedback, and participate in forum discussions. They attend classes, face to face and via virtual classroom, by logging in remotely.   The current course takes around 75 hours over 9 weeks, and teacher input for each group requires 6 – 9 hours per week.

Main Duties

  1. Make use of all delivery platforms and resources as required by course, and as instructed by Academic Manager and by teacher handbook.  Delivery platforms are: Online course, virtual learning environment (VLE), web conferencing facility, and classroom equipment 
  2. Monitor progress and provide regular feedback via email and VLE, to help manage students’ performance throughout the course
  3. Teach classes on external/corporate premises as required  
  4. Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, as required.  Contribute to development of digital products as required
  5. Complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards
  6. Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  7. Support local marketing and promotional strategy as required, by testing and counselling prospective students, providing  demonstrations, and generally providing excellent customer service
  8. Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas: Child Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and Health and Safety
  9. Travel to locations of face to face teaching as required 


Other important features or requirements of the job

Flexible working week with some irregular hours, though two days off per week are standard.

Face to face teaching normally takes place at the weekend, (though not every weekend) and virtual classes are normally in the evenings.  It is expected that you are available and willing to work on Saturday and /or Sunday for delivering face-to-face sessions and evenings for Virtual Online Sessions.

There is no maximum or minimum number of teaching hours per week, but it is envisaged that teachers will have 3-5 classes running at a time, meaning a teaching load of between 18 and 27 hours (depending on the stage of each class).  

Occasionally, travel to off-site corporate clients for face-to-face sessions may be required. Initially, possible travel to other locations where programme is offered.
