Context of the Training program:

Conglomeration of primary producers, especially small and marginal farmers, artisans, livestock rearers and fishermen Cinto Farmer Producer Organization has emerged as one of the most recent pathways to address many challenges of agriculture and allied sectors which are being faced by the small holders. There are more than 5500 such Farmer Producer Organizations (FPO) in India and another 10000 are awaiting formation in the coming decade. FPOs are primarily formed with a notion of using economies of scale in favour of the small and marginal members so that they harness better price of their produce in higher order markets as well as lower transaction costs and also save on inputs. FPOs are envisaged to evolve as independent business entities that facilitate creation of social capital, provide technical support and offer a range of services to its members. Just like other businesses, FPOs also require handholding and nurturing at different stages viz. mobilizing, initiation, stabilizing and diversification. Development professionals play the role of catalyst for FPOs. These professionals face a plethora of unique challenges, some of which arise while addressing the social mandate of ensuring equity, identifying appropriate business opportunities, incorporating business principles, ensuring statutory compliances, inculcating collective entrepreneurship and earning profits to ensure sustainability. Among these, challenges related to Business modelling, Business planning, Financial, Marketing and Business management stand out to be the most critical ones in the path to sustainability. Thus there is a strong felt need for development professionals to understand the various dimensions of FPO business models, processes to be followed, tools and techniques to be used and decode the principles of responsible and sustainable business management with a practical outlook.
