Open defecation is one of the biggest challenges faced by the country. In 2014, Havells started building bio-toilets in the schools where we served mid-day meal. So far Havells has built over 1200 bio-toilets in over 150 government schools. While building toilets is one thrust of making India open defecation free, company realized that just building the required infrastructure does not guarantee use or implementation of healthy practices. Not only it is important to generate awareness about hygiene and proper sanitation practices to help make the endeavour sustainable but also a change of perception and behaviour amongst the target masses for a better and brighter future was equally important. Havells envisioned WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Program in almost 100 Government Schools of Alwar where the ecofriendly bio toilets have already been constructed. The program aims at making school children aware of the importance of sanitation and to bring about a change so that they can incorporate good hygiene standards and practices for better health and community hygiene. Also they could encourage others in their homes and social groups to adopt hygienic practices. Havells aim to build similar toilets in another 150 schools by end of this year taking the number of schools to 300. The specialty of these toilets is that they do not need any sewage system. The four layer system works on a bacteria created by DRDO which converts human waste into methane gas and the water that comes out is almost 90% pathogen free which could be used for gardening or ground water recharge.

10. Solar Electricity to Villages Project by Cairn India Limited
Implementing Partner:- SunEdison
Amount Spent: - Rs. 1.39 crores
Thematic Area:- Ensuring environmental sustainability, ecological balance, wildlife & natural resources conservation
Location:- Barmer, Rajasthan
Project Details
Solar Micro-Grid: To address the issue of electricity in rural communities residing in and around Cairn operational areas in Barmer, Cairn India has established a rural solar mini-grid Solar Pilot Project through its partner, Sun Edison and has provided 500 solar home systems to the community at Barmer. A solar micro-grid involves a centralized solar energy production and storage facility, and T&D lines to connect each household to the central system. Polycrystalline MEMC SunEdison solar Panels were provided of total capacity: 27kw; the T&D network is spread across as much as 6kms with the potential to service 100 households; along with a high technology Imergy Vanadium Based Flow battery (170kwh) solution with in-built Inverter. A micro-grid provides the benefit of being able to pool the total availability of power due to a central storage facility, hence each household can avail more power. The central facility is easily scalable (through addition of more PV modules) and hence can be easily ramped up. Post the installation of the PV modules, the ownership of the solar facility was transferred to the Gram Panchayat and will be run by a Village Electricity Committee (VEC) comprising community members who will be responsible for collecting payments, operations, basic maintenance and security of the facility. Under the micro-grid system, each household is connected to a micro-grid of total 27 Kw capacity, through which they can obtain power for common household appliances such as lights, fans, TV etc. Interior wiring and fitting was done by 10 electricians trained at the Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC) as part of their On-the-Job (OJT) training. The solar micro-grid would support an average household load of 121 watts for 6 hours, that is, on an average 726 watt hour of usable energy would be available on an average for a household. However, micro-grid has the added pooling-in benefit due to the larger central storage, hence there is no fixed limitation on household use; only a limitation on aggregate use.
