Amway India takes up water conservation project

The district administration, in association with Amway India, Nilakottai, has taken up water conservation project at an estimated cost of ₹65 lakh at Pallapatti in Nilakottai block as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, according to Collector T.G. Vinay.

Addressing the project launch function at the Mavur dam site near Pallapatti on Sunday, he said that Mavuthu Odai and six supply channels would be desilted, restored and revived and two check-dams, five boulder dams, five gabion dams, 49 ring wells and rainwater recharge pits would be created this fiscal.

It would recharge groundwater and mitigate water scarcity in Pallapatti and Jambuduraikottai panchayats. Dindimavanam, a voluntary body that desilted several tanks and supply channels in the district, would monitor the project.

In the second phase, Agaram and Pulamasi tanks would be interconnected, he added.

We had already restored and rehabilitated over 2,000 acres of water catchment area of rural tanks and 70-km supply channels and erected boundary stones under CSR project of various industries and spinning mills. Those waterbodies were restored to their original state and boundaries demarcated after removing encroachments, the Collector said.

Launching the project, Forests Minister C. Srinivasan appealed to the industry to rehabilitate more tanks in nearby villages to improve the water table.

Amway Vice-President Rajeev Das Gupta said that 16-km Mavuthu dam channel would be desilted and other streams — Pamputhu, Pondhu Puli Odai, Varattaru odai and Oonambu odai, all originating from Sirumalai hill — would be connected with it.tion, enterprise development, employment generation, renewable energy and the like.
