Madan Kaaj-Button: The Tailor Who Stitched His Life Back Together— Thanks to Radio

In the dusty lanes of Naugaon village in Ramgarh block of Alwar district, Rajasthan, the steady whirr of Madan’s sewing machine is as familiar as his warm laughter. A humble tailor, Madan known on-air as Madan Kaaj-Button, never imagined that a single radio call would transform his life.

For years, he had been trapped in a bitter family property dispute, feeling powerless and uncertain of where to turn. Legal help seemed out of reach—until one morning, a casual twist of the radio dial landed him on CR Connect FM 107.8 (An initiative of S M Sehgal Foundation).

That day, the RJ invited villagers to call Kanoon Ki Baat, a live legal awareness program featuring Mr. Mohanlal Soni, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Alwar.
“Join us for Kanoon Ki Baat… Call us with your legal questions,” the RJ urged.

Something about those words struck home. For the first time, legal experts felt close, accessible, even free. When the studio number 9813164542 was repeated, Madan didn’t hesitate. Moments later, he was live on-air, sharing his problem directly with the DLSA Secretary.
“Please come to my office tomorrow morning. We will surely resolve your problem”. came the calm, decisive reply.

The very next day, Madan visited the DLSA office. A mediation session was arranged, and his family was called in. Over two meetings, all sides were heard, laws explained, and a fair compromise reached. Within 15 days, the land dispute was settled peacefully. Years of tension melted away, replaced by relief and restored family ties.

“Radio changed my life,” Madan says with a smile. His cheerful daily greetings as Madan Kaaj-Button have since made him a minor local celebrity, even attracting customers from other villages.

The radio became a lifeline for the whole family. His wife, Bhoti Devi, learned about kitchen gardens and women’s rights; their daughter found joy in Radio School, where science came alive. “We think differently now,” Bhoti says. “We want our girl to learn, to dream.”

In a village stitched together by soundwaves, Madan’s voice—and his hope for a better future—carries far. For him, community radio is more than entertainment; it is the thread that mended his life.
