Only 15% of the NGOs regularly send text messages to their donors and supporters

The Public Interest Registry and non- Profit Tech for Good came together to conduct a research on how well the Global NGO’s under and use online platforms to communicate with their donors and supporters. Over the last 20 years, Internet technology has become an integral part of NGO sector, but the usage and understanding of these online technologies depends on the country’s infrastructure and development. Various factors have halted or fastened the development of Internet platform depending on the country. The major data comes from the NGO’s based in United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

The 2017 Global Online Technology Report is out based upon the survey results of 4,908 NGO’s in 153 countries across 6 continents. Here are few interesting Info graphics from the said report:

  • According to the survey, 92% of NGO’s have an official website, and 78% of them are compatible to be used on smart phones.
  • 71% of the NGO’s regularly sends out newsletters, email updates to their donors and supporters. Alost 80% of them says it’s effective for online communications and raising funds.
  • 60% of the NGO’s worldwide uses .org domain and only 2% of them uses .ong or .ngo domains.
  • 38% of the NGO’s publish their blogs on regular basis.

 

 

How Global NGO’s use Online and Mobile Fundraising Tools:

  • 67% of the NGO’s accept online donations/ Payments out of which the most preferred of payment is via credit card (78%).
  • Only 15% of the NGOs regularly send text messages to their donors and supporters and 40% of them accept text donations.

How Global NGOs use Social Media:

  • 92% of the NGO’s have a Facebook page and around 78% of them have a twitter profile. Even lesser NGO’s have a Instagram account (39%).
  • Another major social media platform used by NGOs is YouTube (55%), followed by LinkedIn (51%). Only 16% of them use Whatsapp as means of communications.
  • Only 17% of the NGOs have live-tweeted or have had participated in one.

How Global NGos manage Social Media:

  • 30% of the communications of social media is carried forward by the staff and only around 18% of communications is done by the volunteers. There is even less of fundraising stuff (6%).
  • Around 11% of the NGOs hire a full time or part time Social Media Manager.
  • Only 30% of the NGO’s globally have had social media over over 5-9 years and less than 5% of them have had it for 10 or more years.
  • 32% of the NGOs globally have a written social media strategy that is to be applied.
  • Only 34% the NGO’s worldwide have paid for advertising on social media.

  • A good number of executive staff (66%) supports prioritising social media in their communications and fundraising schemes.
  •  A majority of 49% of the executive staff have insufficient knowledge about social media & 26% of the executive staff refuses to invest in financial and staff resources for social media.
  • 16% of the executive staff believe social media platform to be of no use to their organisation and 9% of them are fearful of legal problems resulting from using social media platforms.
