Six CSR Foundations in Gujarat-Driving Impacts through Corporate Social Responsibility

Gujarat has been one of the fastest growing states in terms of industrial production, business investment and CSR spend by companies in development projects. Gujarat is among top five CSR fund recipient states in India in 2015-16. NGOBOX has been working on CSR projects analysis for the benefit of businesses, implementing agencies and government institutions for past three years. Here’s a list of major CSR Foundations in Gujarat:


Adani Foundation

Established in: 1996

The Adani Foundation is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Adani Group, a business empire that is dedicated to inclusive growth and sustainable development towards nation building and not only communities it is involved in. Adani Foundation ACTs on Education, Community Health, Sustainable Livelihood Development and Rural Infrastructure Development.

Adani’s Latest Initiative:

PROJECT SAKSHAM- ‘Creating future full of skilled youth’

"SAKSHAM" is an ideology of Adani Skill Development Centre (ASDC) to make the youth of India capable of achieving their Goals by becoming Skilled Professionals. The objective of the centres is to conduct Placement Linked training program for at least 40,000 youth per year across the Nation on various trades.

PROJECT SuPOSHAN- ‘working towards healthier future’

SuPoshan’s intent is to work towards reducing malnutrition among children and anaemia amongst adolescent girls and women. Post commencement, ‘SuPoshan’ has integrated 162 sanginis and trained them on the subject. At Mundra Site, SuPoshan is at present covering 61 Gram Panchayats and targeting population of about 80 Thousand. 

 

PROJECT UDAAN- ‘A Learning based initiative’

Under the project, an exposure tour is organised, wherein students from across India are given a chance to visit Adani port to get a perceptive into the large scale business carried out there. Till date, the Project Udaan in Gujarat has reached out to around 1.5 Lacs students covering 1600 schools/colleges.

 

SWACCHAGRAHA- ‘Creating culture of cleanliness’

The particular project was inspired by the infamous ‘Satyagrah’ movement in engaging    people and bringing out change in terms of cleanliness. With a quest to fight against filth and cure the litterbug in all of us, Swachhagraha also takes the Swaccha Bharat Abhiyaan a step further and aims to ensure that India remains litter free beyond 2019 and forever.

 

SUPPORT TO GOVERNMENT SCHOOL: ‘Improving the quality of education’

Under this initiative, Adani Foundation is working towards improving the quality of education in Government schools. Initiatives like Education Volunteers, Meena Communicative Initiatives with guidance from UNICEF, Activities to promote girl child education, Educational tours like Project Udaan and Teachers’ training and motivational programs.

 

Deepak Foundation

 Established in: 1982

Deepak Foundation, a Corporate Social Responsibility of Deepak Group, was established in1982 with a vision of providing healthcare facilities to the families of workers and local communities residing in the industrial area of Nandesari. The Foundation has advanced over the period into a leading non-profit civil society in Gujarat and has stretched its services nationwide with branch offices in Pune, Roha and Taloja in Maharashtra, Hyderabad in Telengana, Indore in Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi.

Deepak Foundations’ Initiatives:

DEEPAK MEDICAL FOUNDATION: ‘providing cost effective medical services’

DMF was conceived with its priority set to provide maternal and child care services.  The main goal of the foundation was to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in the rural area of nandesari.

 

COMPHREHENSIVE EMERGENCY OBSTETRIC & NEWBORN CARE: ‘strengthening the health delivery system’

CEONC was constructed within government’s Community Health Centre in 2006. The main objectives of CEMONC are to provide immediate care to the emergency obstetric cases referred from grassroots level and public health facilities.

 

MOBILE HEALTH ISSUES- ‘providing access to primary healthcare services to the poor’

Deepak Foundation is running MHUs in the urban, rural and tribal blocks in the districts of Gujarat and Maharashtra through active support from government and corporate bodies. The MHUs operate with the overall goal of providing access to primary healthcare.

 

MAHILA KISAN SASHAKTIKARAN PARIYOJNA: ‘enhancing women’s participation in agriculture’

The overall goal of this program is to create socio-economic empowerment of the poor small and marginal tribal women farmers. MKSP was initiated in the year 2013-2014 in two tribal blocks namely, Kawant and Naswadi of Chhota Udepur district, under State Rural Livelihood Mission. This program includes 6000 tribal women farmers as beneficiaries.

 

S.R Shroff Aajivika Trust

Established in: 1969

S. R. Shroff Aajivika Trust is an initiative of UPL Limited (formerly known as United Phosphorus Limited) to create sustainable livelihood.  UPL Limited is global generic crop protection, chemicals and Seeds Company. UPL Limited has been donning the mantle of the socially responsible corporate even before the term had become a predominant norm.

S.R. Shroff Aajivika Trusts’ Initiative

UPL NIYOJANIY KENDRA- ‘Inclusive growth for all’

 UPL Niyojaniy Kendra works towards providing comprehensive skills training to the   unemployed youth. The trainings combine foundational, workforce readiness skills with industry-specific skills like Welder, Fitter, Electrician, Plumber etc. Upon completion of the training, qualified candidates will be placed into entry-level jobs, thus creating a path to secure livelihood.

UPL UDYAMITA PROGRAM- ‘Self Help Group’

The aim of this program is to build capacity of tribal women from Valsad area through formation of self help groups and to support the sustainability and growth of SHG by addressing common issues such as Capacity development, Entrepreneurial Skill development, access to capital and raw material, Quality, market access ,etc.

UPL KHEDUT PRAGATI: ‘Improving Farmers’ standard of living’

This particular project is focused on giving priority to agriculture will achieve the goals of reducing poverty and inclusive growth. The growth with inclusiveness can be achieved only when agriculture grows. With the declining share of agriculture to GDP, the continuing high pressure of population on agriculture and the increasing fragmentation of land holdings leading to decreasing availability of cultivated land.

 

Tribhuvandas Foundation

Established in: 1975

Tribhuvandas Foundation is an Integrated Rural Health & Development Programme of Amul. It fulfills the basic health care needs of the villages. Apart from providing primary treatment for various common ailments, the Foundation is also actively involved in promoting preventive health practices. It is headquartered at Anand with sub-centres spread over the district Anand and Kheda.

Tribhuvandas Foundation’s Initiatives:

Treatment of common ailments; Immunization through vaccination – BCG, Triple Vaccine, Polio, Measles, Tetanus, Anti rabies at subsidised rate;

Treatment of tuberculosis and anaemia; Antenatal, postnatal care, neonatal and infant care 

 Education and counselling on reversible and permanent methods of family planning, health education sessions and referral of critical cases to secondary and tertiary care centres; 

Distribution of contraceptive tablets and condoms through regular camps; Laparoscopic TL and mini lap operations, insertion of Copper-T (IUD), and Tubectomy;  Cancer awareness programme, disease detection camp and treatment at Shri Krishna Hospital, Karamsad; Balwadis (Day Care Centres) for pre-school play and learning activities for children of three to five years.

 

Arvind Mills’ Sharda Trust

Established in: 1995

The Strategic Help Alliance for Relief to Distressed Areas Trust (SHARDA Trust) is the organizational base for ‘CSR programs. The broad objective is to improve the quality of life of the urban poor in India. The Trust’s strategy comprises of the following elements of improving infrastructure facilities in distressed areas, providing healthcare facilities, providing educational facilities and helping the employable youth upgrade their skill set and secures well paying jobs.

Sharda Trusts’ Initiatives:

DEVELOPING AND UPGRADING VOCATIONAL SKILLS- ‘skills development training & employment opportunities’

The Trust initiated workshops where the participants were given professional training as Sewing Machine Operatives. These workshops were held in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Gandhinagar, and the Trust organized their placement with Arvind and other Garment manufacturing firms.

PRACTICAL ENGLISH AND COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TRAINING- ‘English language training for the unemployed’

A natural extension to the Education program is the Practical English and Computer Applications (PECA) program for the unemployed youth who have studied through a vernacular medium. The program involves the use of case studies for teaching English as this leads to development in reading, writing, and comprehension and also aids presentation skills. 

GYANDA- ‘Improving the quality of education’

Launched in 2006, the SHARDA Trust’s model is a unique supplementary education model designed for primary school going children studying in Municipal Schools. It prevents these children from dropping out and helps them complete their basic education from standard V to XII. Presently, the Trust has over 1000 students spread across standards V to XII and the figure is expected to increase to about 1600 students within the next two years. 

 

Atul Foundation

Established in: NA

Atul Foundation was created to bring all the activities related to serving the society under one umbrella. The activities are grouped under 6 broad Programs, namely, i) Conservation, ii) Education, iii) Empowerment, iv) Health, v) Infrastructure and vi) Relief.

Atul Foundation Initiative:

CONSERVATION-

Recharging ground levels of water, planting trees, Dams

EDUCATION-

Building schools and colleges

EMPOWERMENT-

Vocational training, Self help group for women, apprentice training

HEALTH-

Eye checking camps, primary healthcare, blood donation camp

RELIEF-

Flood, famines, earthquake relief 

Promoting Health care including Preventive Health care  through awareness programmes, health check-ups, provision of medicine & treatment facilities , providing pre natal & post natal healthcare facilities, prevention of female feticide through awareness creation,  program for preventing diseases and building immunity, providing for mentally retarded, blind children and socially weak people for reducing inequalities faced by the society;

Ensuring environmental sustainability and ecological balance through:  Plantation drives in schools, villages, our manufacturing units & offices/business premises and other areas in general; Reviving endangered plants, promoting agro-forestry; Protection of flora & fauna; conservation of natural resources.
