Tata Power sponsors bicycles for community school children

Pune and Mumbai: Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has always given importance to quality education, with a special emphasis to encourage the education of the girl child. Upholding this commitment, Tata Power’s employees from Mumbai sponsored 22 bicycles to the community school children at a function held at Zillah Parishad Primary School in Ahmednagar. The programme, organised by the School Management Committee of Tal Nagar village, was attended by Dilip Kawade, senior specialist, Tata Power Community Development Trust and village sarpanch, Padmavati Jagtap along with many other well-wishers.

The objective of this initiative was to address the commuting problems faced by the local students who travel long distances to reach school, thereby, motivating them to increase their attendance. A total of 22 employees donated a sum of Rs 85,200, as part of Tata Volunteering Week 6, to be able to sponsor 22 bicycles, which were then distributed to 12 girl students and 10 boys from Pimpalgaon Kauda and Shahajapur. Along with this generous distribution, an additional bicycle was donated for the recreation of younger students at schools. Inspired by our employees, three more small bicycles were sponsored by a villager to Anganwadis located in Pimpalgaon Kauda village.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashok Sethi, COO and ED (Operations), said, “We at Tata Power believe that education is a key contributor to societal development which is why we are continuously at work to develop newer ways to make it more and more accessible to the children in our vicinity. These bicycles will ensure that our children do not have to spend a long time walking to school. I would like to thank each employee that volunteered to contribute for this noble and innovative initiative.”

The bicycles will be retained by schools and rotated amongst newly enrolled students every year.
