Tata Power’s Maithon Power Limited Inaugrates Production Centre as a part of Handicraft Training for women in Maithon, Dhanbad

India’s largest integrated power Company, Tata Power, is known for undertaking various activities with an aim to uplift the quality of life and economic conditions of its surrounding community. Following this philosophy, Tata Power’s Maithon Power Limited (MPL), the company’s 74:26 joint ventures with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) inaugurated Production Centre as a part of Handicraft Training for women in villages of Maithon.

In collaboration with Amarkutir Society for Rural Development (AKSRD), this undertaking is benefitting more than 60 women artisans from 17 villages.

The main objective behind this initiative is to impart required skills and training to women and generate employment opportunities so that they can support their families with the additional income and become self-dependent. The program is divided into two parts, first part being training and production. The women are trained in bag making, needle work (Katha Stitch) and tailoring. After the completion of the first stage, production of goods is carried out which will be purchased by AKSRD and the women are provided with their remuneration on monthly basis in their individual bank account. As a part of the initiative, AKSRD provides the raw materials for production and after preparation of finished products, quality inspection is conducted.

Talking about the initiative, the CEO & ED of Maithon Power Ltd, Tata Power, Mr. Chandrashekhar, said “Tata Power, has always taken pride in enabling, developing and supporting the community in order to enhance their livelihood and ensure holistic development. With the setting up of production centre, we are confident that the initiative will aid towards their financial and social empowerment of women. We would like to thank AKSRD for their continued support in making this program an immense success. We look forward to working on more such initiatives aimed at providing sustainable livelihood to women of this nation."

The production of goods includes, Mobile Bag, Evening Bag, Slide Bag, School Bag, Handle Bag, Razor Pouch and Pouch Bag. Maithon Power Limited has been carrying out the skill training program since 2013. The women are also handed a certificate post the completion of skill training.
