WHEN A DYING LAKE TOOK A BREATH AGAIN: THE MIRACULOUS REBIRTH OF YAGAVODDU KERE

The sun once rose over Yagavoddu Kere to greet glistening waters, the laughter of farmers, and the gentle rhythm of life that flowed through 40 villages. But as years passed, the lake — once the lifeline of over 10,000 people — began to fade. Its waters shrank, its pulse weakened, and so did the hope of the people who depended on it. Fields dried, dreams dimmed, and the land that once nurtured abundance turned into cracked earth and silent despair.

Yet, where nature seemed to give up, humanity stepped in. In the heart of despair, Aahwahan Foundation, in partnership with Netcracker Technology, dared to imagine the impossible: not just saving a lake, but restoring the lifeblood of an entire community, where every ripple would once again echo hope, growth, and survival. What followed wasn’t just restoration; it was resurrection.

“The lake’s revival isn’t just about water — it’s about life,” said Ramesh Gowda, a farmer who had almost given up his land . When Yagavoddu Kere dried, our hearts dried with it. But when we saw the first rains fill her again, it felt like life itself had returned”.

The Yagavoddu Kere Lake Restoration Project was born out of that collective pain — and an unyielding spirit to heal. Over the months, the desolate lakebed was revived into a thriving ecosystem. The water now mirrors the skies again, nurturing crops, sustaining animals, and rekindling livelihoods. This revival has also restored the water outflow system that feeds seven other nearby lakes — securing water for miles beyond the village borders.

“The revival of Yagavoddu Kere has changed everything — it has recharged our groundwater, revived our farms, and reversed migration. This lake is now a living promise that sustainable change can keep communities rooted.” said Block President Byre Gowda

For the farmers of Yagavoddu Kere’s 40 surrounding villages, the lake has always been their source of sustenance, income, and survival. With its waters shrinking over the years, crop failures became frequent, irrigation suffered, and families struggled to make ends meet. The restoration of Yagavoddu Kere is not just a revival of a lake; it is a revival of livelihoods. Fertile fields will flourish again, crops can be grown throughout the year, and farmers will once again secure stable incomes. Beyond agriculture, the restored lake will support fishing, livestock, and allied activities, creating a ripple effect of economic opportunities for thousands. For the community, every drop of water returning to the lake symbolizes renewed hope, resilience, and the chance to rebuild lives that had been on the brink of despair.

On the corporate front, Netcracker Technology was deeply involved in making this dream a reality. At Netcracker Bangalore, environmental stewardship is not just a responsibility — it is a core value that drives every initiative. From supporting community-led projects like the Yagavoddu Kere Lake restoration to implementing sustainable practices within their operations, Netcracker demonstrates that corporate leadership can go hand in hand with ecological care. Their commitment goes beyond funding; it is about listening to communities, understanding the intricate balance of ecosystems, and acting decisively to protect them. By partnering with the Aahwahan Foundation, Netcracker has shown that technology and compassion can coexist, creating solutions that nurture both people and the planet. This initiative is proof of how forward-thinking organizations can not only drive innovation but also restore hope, replenish natural resources, and inspire generations to value and protect the environment.

The restoration work was meticulous—desilting the lake, strengthening the embankments, planting native saplings, and rejuvenating inflow and outflow channels. Every step was guided by the principle that this lake wasn’t just a water body; it was the pulse of a region.

“Our mission has always been to catalyze change where it matters most,” says the CEO of Aahwahan Foundation, Mr. Braja Kishore Pradhan “ With the generous support of our sponoser, we have revived the lake, this rival Yagavoddu Kere is not philanthropy; it’s a promise — a promise to stand with communities when they need us most.“When a lake breathes again, an entire civilization awakens. This is the power of unity — where corporate empathy and community spirit converge, life finds its way back.”

The restoration of Yagavoddu Kere has also become a crucial step toward rejuvenating the region’s groundwater reserves. With desilting and proper channel connectivity, the lake now allows rainwater to percolate deep into the soil, replenishing underground aquifers that had nearly run dry. This natural recharge will ensure year-round availability of water for irrigation, drinking, and daily needs—reviving wells and boreholes that once stood empty. It marks a sustainable turnaround for the entire ecosystem, securing water security for generations to come.

As the waters of Yagavoddu Kere now lap gently against its banks, the transformation is palpable. Farmers watch their fields bloom again, children laugh along the shore, and the air is filled with the promise of a renewed future. What was once a dying lake has become a symbol of resilience, collaboration, and the extraordinary power of human will.

Standing at the banks today, one can still see the faint outlines of the past — the cracks in the soil where dreams once broke. But between those cracks now flows the shimmer of renewal.

Yagavoddu Kere lives again — and with it, 10,000 hearts beat stronger.
