6-Day Certificate Course on Pedagogy of Early Reading and Writing

Traditionally literacy was understood as the skill of reading and writing. Then, early literacy pedagogy comprised teaching children to decode the letter sound relationship. As the world started thinking anew of how children learn to read and write, a revolutionary paradigm shift in our understanding of the meaning of literacy and pedagogy of emergent literacy was underway. This shift can be summed up in the famous maxim:

‘learning to read for reading to learn’. The understanding of literacy as the building blocks of empowerment and inclusion was due to the recognition that it is a key process in learning. This changed our understanding of literacy pedagogy. This course takes teacher educators through the paradigm shift through a hands on experience of the pedagogy of early reading and writing.

Part I of the course examines the current practices of teaching early reading and writing, the mismatch between the natural processes of learning to read and write and the practices followed in schools. It explores the new approaches to teaching reading and writing.

Part II of the course explores the balanced and comprehensive approach to reading and writing pedagogy. It introduces the foundational and core processes of reading and writing. The course develops an understanding of the foundational processes: the importance of talk, the process of emergent reading and writing, concepts of print, story-telling and story reading. It explores the core processes: the development of phonics, vocabulary and fluency.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for those who seek to understand the pedagogy of early literacy. It is ideal for educators who teach courses in early literacy, literacy pedagogy or pedagogy of language in DIETs, SCERTs and CTEs. It is a must for educators from NGOs working in the field, leading interventions in early literacy

What you will learn

Part 1:

a). How to examine current early literacy practices and their mismatch with reality.

b). How to evaluate different approaches to literacy pedagogy.

c). The elements of a balanced approach to literacy pedagogy.

Part 2:

How to develop the following processes in the classroom.

a). Emergent Literacy Processes: pedagogy of talk, concepts of print, phases of early reading development.

b). Pedagogical Processes: Story-telling and Story reading, phonics, vocabulary and fluency development.

c). Assessment of early reading and writing

Certification of Participation

The participants will be awarded a certificate of participation on completion of the entire duration of six days
