Introduction

All over the world, population growth, changing consumption patterns and the resulting growth in demand for food and renewable natural resources are leading to a continuous expansion and intensification of agriculture with adverse impacts on biological diversity and ecosystem services.

The objective of the project “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in agrarian landscapes” (IKI-Biodiv) is to strengthen the capacities on conserving and promoting of biodiversity and ecosystem services of land users and their organisations, technical experts and decision makers in civil society and public institutions. These operate at local, regional and national level in the environmental, agricultural, forestry and water sectors. Their improved knowledge and its application to strategies, planning and practice will contribute to promoting biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. The project will evaluate good biodiversity enhancing land-use practices in agriculture and promote their implementation in pilot activities. Technical, organisational and socio-cultural experiences gathered during implementation will be collated, analysed and disseminated at regional and national level. The measures conducted at this regional and national level aim to improve the sectoral plans and the capacities of the institutions operating in the area of land use. They will share the experiences gathered in the different countries, document their findings using concrete examples, and disseminate them at international level.

Objectives of the Assignment

The objective of the assignment is to analyze current landuse governance and underlying policies aiming to review their importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Building on these governance and administrative framework conditions agricultural practices will be carefully examined to understand their contribution or impact to biodiversity which will lead to the identification of good practices

Required Qualification Profile

  • Post Graduate in environmental Science, Environmental Law or related degree with 10 years of relevant experience
  • Long-standing experience and profound competencies in biodiversity and ecosystem service assessment and evaluation of agro-ecological aspects with specific reference to north east India and more specifically Nagaland and Mizoram.
  • Potentially an expert with proven expertise of having worked in issues related to Nagaland agro-biodiversity
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of experience of working on agriculture, land use and resource management issues across Nagaland;
  • Experience in documentation and research with farmers and policy makers alike;
  • Good institutional and networking base in Nagaland to facilitate related activities
  • Good understanding of the social dynamics and traditions, vis-à-vis, land-use, governance and resource management.
  • Good networker and organiser to organise and manage Stakeholder Consultation in Nagaland.
