The Assistant Manager Monitoring & Evaluation is responsible for the routine monitoring and evaluation activities of Avantha Foundation projects. H/She will work with the Manager of Communication & Documentation and Project Managers/Leads in designing and conducting formative research; gathering qualitative and quantitative baseline, interim and endline data; developing management information systems (MIS) and forms for technical monitoring of projects; developing survey instruments; analyzing MIS and survey data; submitting timely MIS reports to the management and donors; and for generating appropriate and regular MIS feedback reports to inform program and to enable timely performance reviews and corrective action.


Systems Development:    

  • Studies objectives, technical strategies, implementation approaches and outcomes of Foundation’s projects; develops and implements formative studies to gather baseline information both qualitative and quantitative; develops rapid appraisal study instruments and implements such studies in consultation with Project Managers/Leads; assists with the development of implementation and work plans.
  • Develops performance indicators for project activities; and designs MIS systems and tools to gather and report data against performance indicators; submits MIS reports to the management and donors per approved formats.
  • Makes analyzed MIS and other survey-related data available to Program Managers/Leads and other colleagues in the Foundation to enable study of effectiveness of various program components so as to take appropriate corrective action as needed.

Research and Documentation:

  • Conducts situational and needs assessments to establish program/project requirements in terms of Maternal Child Health and Nutrition, Democratic Governance, Advocacy and other program areas to which the Foundation may expand its work. Studies include mapping, enumeration and needs assessment of primary beneficiaries as well as situational assessments consisting of interviews with secondary and tertiary stakeholders.
  • Works with the Manager Communication & Documentation, Project Managers and other colleagues at the Foundation to design, carry out, measure, and document operations research and other special studies as needed.
  • Assists with documentation of project and program experiences, and disseminates such information by preparation of articles, presentation papers and other documentation in meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences.

Technical Support and Capacity Building:

  • Ensures MIS capacity building of project functionaries and Avantha Fellows to use MIS systems, to capture data accurately and in a timely manner, to analyze and use the same for decision-making and corrective action.
  • Identifies consultants/consulting organizations that will assist the Foundation in M&E and research related activities. Prepares scopes of work for them, evaluates work plans and budgets proposed in response to scopes of work sent, monitors their work, certifies completion and recommends payment as per agreed terms.
  • Works closely with colleagues in the Foundation to facilitate their understanding of MIS systems and to train them on MIS-related topics, provides technical assistance on MIS to Foundation’s partners as needed.
  • Undertakes field visits as needed to acquire and maintain first-hand knowledge and understanding of field realities and to provide technical assistance to Avantha Fellows and other grassroots functionaries.


  • Ensures that M&E responds effectively to a variety of programmatic, financial, administrative and logistical needs that the Foundation generates, and that inputs are provided in a timely manner for development of proposals, contracts and agreements with donors/partners.
  • As directed by the CEO, represents the Foundation on MIS related matters with counterparts in donor agencies and partners, and provides MIS oversight to partners as needed.
  • Evaluates and reports on the outcomes of engagement with consultants and other external agencies on M&E related activities.


  • Performs other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Job requirements

  • Advanced degree in Statistics, Social Sciences or any other relevant discipline.
  • At least five years’ experience independently handling M&E functions of a non-profit organization. Experience in Public Health, especially MCHN programs a definite plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis, design of evaluations and operations research studies.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis software, quantitative and qualitative.
  • Good computer skills, especially in database management.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Good English language skills, oral and written. Knowledge of Hindi or/and Marathi preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to remote project locations in India 10% of time.
