Job Description

Athena Infonomics is looking for a Data Analyst to carry out work on data sourcing, integration, analysis, and dissemination for their growing portfolio in Data Science and Digital Services. The Data Analyst will have the unique responsibility of interacting with senior team members, and key global stakeholders, to help develop the portfolio and build knowledge products at the frontier of data for social impact. The analyst will work closely with the Data and Technology Leads, as well as all of Athena’s consultants and staff, and external stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

Data Analytics

• Data collection, transformation, quality control, dissemination for different projects across Athena’s portfolio.
• Develop simple technological solutions for learning and knowledge management – including building dashboards and information platforms.
• Explain and defend potential insights and conclusions drawn from data, identify and investigate potential data anomalies, and recommend corrective action.
• Perform data modelling, implement, and test data modelling designs through advanced math and statistics. Use modern data analytical techniques working with information retrieval, machine learning, unsupervised clustering & data mining, text and image analysis, and geospatial data analysis to solve business problems.
• Generate business insights using tools such as R, Python, QGIS, and PowerBI.
• Suggesting the best analytical approach to address the business challenge, with an emphasis on social development and social impact.

Knowledge Development

• Support the team in building methodological concept notes, maintenance of codebases, and documentation of datasets used.
• Identify specific data use cases to help in adding value to the stakeholders, going above and beyond simple analysis.
• Provide training and technical assistance in usage of data and technical tools in developing country contexts.

Business Development and Outreach

• Build technically sound proposals within the growing portfolio and scope of work in the data and digital business line.
• Expand global networks and outreach through proactive interactions with experts and partners.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Econometrics/Economics, or related fields with quantitative and analytical skills.

Professional Experience:

• Two years of work experience in similar contexts.
• Strong analytical skills: Proven experience in working in dynamic data contexts (structured and unstructured), to produce advanced knowledge.
• Ability to work independently to develop fit-for-purpose data and technology solutions in different sector contexts.
• Experience in implementing innovative data solutions, and design thinking.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – to coordinate effectively in multicultural teams and experts from different sectors.
• Strong documenting skills – to help produce concise reports, knowledge documents, and proposals.

Technical Expertise:

• Adept in the Microsoft Office Suite: Efficiently leveraging Excel and Powerpoint is a huge plus.
• Proficiency in working with R and Python – specifically for data transformation, and working with diverse datasets (specifically including image, text, and satellite data), as well as developing bespoke dashboards.
• Ability to develop visualizations in PowerBI, Shiny, or Python.
• Sound understanding of diverse datatypes, and experience in working with geospatial data.
• Database management experience – good technical understanding and adaptability to work with MySQL, PostgreSQL.
