The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research centre working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of 194 affiliated professors at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty. J-PAL South Asia, based at the Institute for Financial Management and Research in India, leads J-PAL’s work in the South Asia region. J-PAL South Asia conducts randomized evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and helps partners scale up effective programs. Over more than ten years of existence, J-PAL South Asia has conducted 193 ongoing and completed randomized evaluations.

Job Description

The green accelerator project is being implemented by TechnoServe across green enterprises in India. J-PAL South Asia is hiring for Environment Consultant position(s) to conduct surveys and environmental audits on small green enterprises as a part of the accelerator program. This project is aimed at measuring the financial and environmental performance of green enterprises that are a part of the accelerator program. In the ongoing phase, we are looking at carrying out an extensive survey across 100+ enterprises spread across more than 50 cities in India.

We are looking for Environmental consultants who could conduct data collection on environmental and financial aspects.

Job Responsibilities

• Completely understand the measurement framework and questions before visiting a firm
• Carrying out extensive data collection and survey across different cities that will involve detailed questionnaires on financial, social and environmental aspects of the business
• Extensive traveling to physically meet the entrepreneurs, understand their business, and undertake the survey
• Coordinating and maintaining relationships with green enterprise entrepreneurs and partner organizations on all field activities.
• Support with planning and execution of survey across different data collection rounds.
• Follow-up with entrepreneurs over emails/messages to send pending data
• Secondary research to find out relevant Emission Factors, Life Cycle Analysis data points that will be relevant for the calculation of final carbon emissions of SGBs
• Doing backend calculation of carbon emissions – the emissions avoided by the firms, and their scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, to finally generate a report for each of the businesses. This should be in line with the GHG protocol, UN Clean Development
• Reporting to Research Associate and Research Manager on all the above mention activities

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum Bachelor of Environmental Science/Bachelor of Environmental Engineering degree or equivalent
• Stakeholder Management
• Basic understanding of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 measurements
• Prior experience in environmental auditing/measurement is highly preferred
• Excellent communication skills in English and in Hindi
• Flexible, self-motivating, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently within a team
•  Willingness to travel extensively in India

Preferred

• Basic understanding of financial and accounting of businesses
• Environmental Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of a product
• Understanding of Scope 4 or ‘avoided emissions’ of a sustainable business
• Understanding of emission sources in industrial and manufacturing processes
• Initiate to contribute, learn and ideate new solutions in a dynamic team environment
• Familiarity with data collection and SurveyCTO will be an advantage
