About the Organization

Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) is an international NGO that has been working with indigenous peoples and forest peoples since 1990. After more than 30 years, FPP works in 18 countries across South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, with around 50 partner organisations based in the tropical forest belt.

We work directly and in solidarity with communities and peoples, supporting them to secure their rights to their traditional lands, territories, and resources, protect their forests and ways of life, and choose their own futures.

Job Description

This role entails overall responsibility for the coordination and management of FPP’s Environmental Governance Programme/EGP, and acting as the central contact point for the programme. Key responsibilities include looking out for the well-being and professional development of the team, ensuring its staffing, resourcing and effectiveness, and facilitating the participatory development of EGP’s strategy. As Coordinator you are also a member of FPP’s senior management team (the Programme Coordination and Management Team/PCMT), thereby sharing overall organisational oversight and decision-making responsibility for FPP’s wider work, and maximising synergies between EGP and the other FPP programmes (Responsible Finance, Legal and Human Rights, and Gender), including via successful cross-programme planning, fundraising, coordination and collaboration. See annex 1 for a summary of the scope of FPP’s programmes. We are looking for a good-hearted and intelligent enabler of the agency of both partners and staff, able to encourage others to work well together to enable our collective vision.

Job Responsibilities

Organisational

  • Participation in the Programme Coordination and Management Team (PCMT).
  • Engage in FPP strategy monitoring, development, and implementation, including with a focus on maximising cross-programmatic strategizing and collaboration.
  • Participation and/or leading in one or more of the various PCMT subgroups: people, fundraising, communications, security, safeguarding, monitoring and evaluation, board and governance.
  • Support other aspects of FPP’s organisational governance and management, including oversight of FPP’s financial health, FPP fundraising and donor relations, and FPP’s organisational development and resilience.

Programme & Cross-programme

  • With the sub-programme leads, ensure the effective coordination of the EGP as a whole, and its three sub-programmes: Conservation and Human Rights; Diverse Cultures, Knowledge and Ecologies; and, Territorial Governance, to maximise strategic impact for partners and ensure coherence with FPP’s wider strategy.
  • Facilitate the development, articulation, implementation and review of EGP strategy, including via opportunities for programme and cross-programme reflection and strategizing.
  • Coordinate programme engagement with international policy spaces at the interface of human rights, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, enabling joined-up and strategic engagement and networking in such policy spaces and good lines of communication both within EGP and between EGP and the other programmes and country teams.
  • Enable coordinated project and fundraising planning and implementation, both within EGP and between EGP and the other programmes, country teams, and the comms, finance and logistics teams. This includes ensuring good internal communication and planning; ensuring project progress is tracked throughout the project cycle; and maintaining and developing good relationships with existing and new donors.
  • Ensure EGP team engagement with FPP’s organisational Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) system and processes, and monitor the quality of work being done and highlighting any areas of improvement and additional support/resources needed.
  • Act as backstop for troubleshooting strategic and practical challenges arising.

Project engagement

  • Consistent with FPP’s ethos of ensuring those in senior management positions are able to continue to meaningfully contribute to, and be grounded by, direct engagement in FPP’s project work; and so that staff can exercise and develop their areas of interest and expertise:
  • Support and sustain direct relationships with local partners and networks, by participating in project work alongside fellow country-specific and thematic teams.
  • Actively engage in building and maintaining international and regional networks and relationships to advance FPP’s mission and objectives, including primarily but not solely with international and regional indigenous peoples’ organisations and networks.
  • Contribute to the team and wider organisation’s thought-leadership by keeping up to date with relevant research, emerging initiatives and opportunities, and horizon scanning; and fostering similar engagement among team members.
  • Contribute to representing FPP externally, including but not limited to issues related to EGP’s core areas of work, while also sustaining a team culture that shares the external representation role in order to build this capacity throughout the team.
