Tasks and responsibilities

  • Work closely with national stakeholders on forest reference level and greenhouse gas inventory for the agriculture, forestry and other land-use (AFOLU) sector;
  • Conduct technical training workshops on forest reference level and greenhouse gas inventory for the AFOLU sector of Bangladesh;
  • Organize and facilitate meetings and national consultations on forest reference level and institutional arrangements for the preparation of the national greenhouse gas inventory for the AFOLU sector;
  • Support the data collection process and the analysis of the latest historical data in updating the national and sub-nationals forest reference levels considering the latest land cover maps and Bangladesh-specific emission factors;
  • Support the Bangladesh Forest Department in submitting the report on forest reference level to the UNFCCC;
  • Update the national greenhouse inventory for the AFOLU sector considering the latest national land cover maps and country-specific emission factors;
  • Prepare country-specific training materials and curricula to strengthen the capacities of national academic institutions in the compilation of greenhouse gas data for the AFOLU sector;
  • Update the national database on emission factors for AFOLU sector;
  • Support the preparation of national documents related to MRV including MoU, data sharing policies, work plan and strategies;
  • Support activities to update the data and information available at the Bangladesh Forest Information system;
  • Provide technical advice and coordination for national multi-stakeholder working groups on forest reference level, and MRV for REDD+;
  • Support activities in improving the national institutional arrangements for the preparation of the greenhouse gas inventory for the AFOLU sector;
  • Support GHG mitigation activities in the AFOLU sector and provide technical support for the development of climate smart agriculture activities;
  • Perform any other tasks required.

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree in forestry, agronomy or environmental sciences (for Consultants)/University while (for PSAs) only first degree required.
  • At least three years of relevant experience related to GHG inventory preparation;
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese) for Consultants. Working knowledge of English (for PSAs)

Selection Criteria

  • Very good knowledge of UNFCCC decisions, GHG inventory preparation, BURs, REL/RLs, IPCC Guidance and Guidelines;
  • Good knowledge on the use of R software;
  • Good knowledge on the use of GIS software (e.g. QGIS);
  • Excellent knowledge on forest monitoring, forest carbon stock assessment and GHG inventory;
  • Extent and relevance of knowledge and achievements in subjects relevant to climate change or monitoring of natural resources;
  • Demonstrated experiences in developing countries past experience in Bangladesh is an added advantage;
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to deliver results within deadlines.
