Key Responsibilities:


Student Support:

 -        Conduct individual counselling for students of grades VII, VIII, IX and X (English-medium and Marathi-medium) to help students understand and overcome social or behavioural issues, set goals, and develop skills, such as organisation, time management, and effective study habits.

 -        Organize small group and/or full-class sessions for all grades around relevant, age-appropriate topics pertaining to social and emotional development (life and social skills, decision-making, bullying, drug abuse, puberty and sex education, etc), incorporating engaging and interactive techniques such as role play, videos, group discussions, case studies, storytelling, etc.

 -        Take ownership of college program outcomes. Create and execute a comprehensive college program plan and budget. Oversee the admissions process for college and vocational courses. Organize group sessions for college students on issues they face (e.g. adapting to new environments, making friends, grooming and hygiene, social skills, etc) and provide career guidance and counselling to students, especially those in grade X and XII. Proactively re-engage drop-out students in AFC’s programming and nurture a community culture of scholastic achievement and employability.

 -        Oversee internship program, including placements, skills assessments, ongoing supervision and regular meetings with primary supervisors to ensure maximum skill development, feedback and evaluation, and reporting. Conduct regular professional development sessions for interns.

 -        Evaluate students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual sessions.

 -        Conduct basic testing to screen for learning disabilities. When identified, facilitate further testing at an external hospital to ensure official documentation of the disability is completed. In the event that a student’s academic challenges can be most appropriately addressed within AIC, work with teachers and staff to ensure the creation of and adherence to an IEP for that student.

-        Liaise with psychiatrist and other relevant external specialists for assistance, professional input, and testing.


Documentation and Reporting:

-        Ensure inputs and outcomes are being tracked thoroughly and regularly. Maintain records with the utmost integrity and confidentiality.

-        Carry out research to develop a comprehensive database of relevant academic and vocational opportunities for students.

-        Create regular reports about the activities of the counselling and college programs.


Partnerships and Collaborative Activities:


-        Lead the AFC counselling team by motivating, mentoring, and supervising counselling/remedial staff members. Hold regular team meetings and cultivate a positive culture of collaboration and teamwork within the counselling staff. Provide ongoing feedback for improvement to other counselling team members and contribute to counsellor performance appraisals.

-        Conduct school visits to assess student performance and discuss behavioural and academic issues/progress.

-        Provide parent counselling and teacher support for students with behavioural and/or academic issues when required.

-        Conduct classroom observations to more effectively recommend strategies for student and classroom management.

-        Conduct home and community visits regularly to ensure students’ holistic needs are being met.

-        Arrange and run regular workshops for AFC staff in support of ongoing efforts to improve student behaviour and academic achievement.

 -        Proactively stay up-to-date and educate AFC team on latest developments and emerging best practices in the field of counselling, to ensure AFC students benefit from the most current recommendations and innovations.

 -        Manage volunteers when available, including coordinating their schedules, interaction with students, and any required reporting.

-        Act as staff facilitator for AFC student council, meeting regularly to guide and support the growth and success of the student council.

-        Develop counselling/academic/remedial/jobs-related contacts and partnerships and leverage them to support AFC students whenever possible.

-        Uphold and promote AFC’s mission and vision.


Desired candidate profile:

-        Masters in counselling psychology or other relevant degree

-        Full fluency in English and Hindi - written and oral (required); fluency in Marathi strongly desired

-        Experience using diverse counselling therapies and techniques

-        Experience working with children and adults; experience in career and college counselling

-        Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills with a tactful, compassionate, and professional demeanor

-        Ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, program staff and Directors, community members, volunteers, etc

-        Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects simultaneously, sometimes under tight deadlines

-        Self-directedness and ability to achieve objectives with minimal oversight; ability and willingness to work flexible hours when required

-        Previous experience working with confidential and/or sensitive information and materials

-        Commitment and passion to work for students’ wellbeing through an outcomes-based approach

-        Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; superior typing skills

-        Willingness and ability to learn new skills on the job as the position evolves with the growth of the organisation
