Manager Communications




Reports to:                     Head – Public Engagement


Location:                          Ahmedabad/Bengaluru/Mumbai, though the job does involve a certain amount of travel across the country.


Salary:                                Commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be at par with the best in sector. Other benefits as per existing policies will be applicable after completion of probationary period.


Nature:                              This post is contractual in nature, i.e. renewable contract of two years (inclusive of 6 months probationary period).


Hours:                              44 Hours per week (including lunch break)


General description of Sense India and the Post


There is broad scope for this post within Sense International India, more commonly known as Sense India. In line with Sense India's strategic plans and policy guidelines the post-holder will work under the leadership of the Head – Public Engagement in planning, implementing and monitoring agreed objectives/ issues.


It is anticipated that the nature of the post will change as the work develops. The post-holder will have an opportunity to increase their skills and develop the job. This is very much a developmental job and the areas of responsibility will increase over a period of time.


Sense India has a small, quickly growing, Public Engagement (communications and fundraising) team. The post holder will be an important member of this team, but will work especially closely with our staff (and consultants) who specialise in ‘communications’ in both off-line and electronic formats.


The emphasis in all areas of our work is through a team approach; and that includes working with our staff in the Programme division.


  1. 1.     Purpose of post


  • Develop and ensure the effective implementation of a communications strategy

  • To develop, implement and manage a range of communications materials, which fulfil all strategic and fundraising objectives


  • Support the project partners of Sense International India in their communications work


  • To provide the highest level of information to existing and prospective supporters, contacts, partners and Sense India staff.



2.  Key Accountabilities/ Tasks


2.1 Communications


  • Develop a Communications strategy, and an annual priorities/ work plan which arises from the strategy, closely linked to our Public Engagement (Fundraising) and Donor Relations services – and then follow it


  • To develop and implement a Sense India brand strategy keeping in mind the organisational policies and strategies.


  • Support the preparation of all communication materials to internal and external audiences, including newsletters, annual reports and other materials


  • Coordinate and support development of content and designs for Public Engagement team from appeals, posters, digital and offline campaigns


  • Coordinate the production of materials on deafblindness in print and appropriate formats (Braille, tape and large print) under the Resource and Information Unit


  • Assist with the preparation and collation of information for the website and the future development of any web-based products


  • Develop a press and media strategy for Sense India and ensure it is carried out


  • Responsible for dealing with printers, suppliers and copywriters for production of information


  • Talk to various stakeholders including partner organisations, teachers, families of deafblind people and other staff to gather information about projects


  • Build relationship with partner organisations of Sense India and provide advice and support on areas on communication


  • Engage the media (both print and digital) for pre and post campaign coverage in conjunction with the communication team. Liaising with Campaign team to promote digital campaigns


  • To oversee the creation, adaption, improvement along with optimizing web communication for SEO and organic and keyword search

2.2 Administrative Support


  • Will be responsible for all administrative tasks relating to the job. The emphasis on all areas of work in Sense International India is a team approach.


  • Maintain general paper and software administrative systems as required


  • Word process letters, memos, reports, notes and other correspondence to a high standard


  • Acknowledge and deal with routine correspondence from individuals, Sense India staff, public bodies, supporters and all other audiences as required


  • Provide support where required for meetings including assisting with the preparation of agendas, collation of papers, taking and drafting of minutes and chasing follow-up actions to deadline.

2.3 Research and Reporting

  • Gather information, where appropriate, from other voluntary sector organisations


  • Gather information for applications and reports. This involves talking to relevant staff, often requesting information to deadlines, while being aware of their other work commitments.

  • Be aware of and sensitive to the impact of gender, race, disability and prejudice on attitudes, professional relationships and professional judgment, and be willing to intervene and challenge where necessary


  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and ensure respect for, observance of and adherence to Sense India’s confidentiality policy


  • Contribute to the development of the role as the organisation develops


  • Undertake any task within the post holder’s skills and abilities as may be requested from time to time


  • The post holder will be expected to attend meetings and be involved in other activities at irregular hours as required.



4.  Additional responsibilities


  • Work closely with the relevant staff across Sense India to ensure effective co-operation and collaboration


  • Plan and prioritise own workload and work without close supervision


  • Any other work as agreed with the Line Manager

5.  Person Specification


  • Graduation and above in Mass Communications or in English literature with relevant experience.


  • At least three years’ experience in similar position in NGO/ INGO/ Media/ Advertising agencies


  • Strong analytical, conceptual and strategic thinking skills


  • Ability to be a self-starter and think proactively.


  • Conversant with relevant software related to designing and DTP work


  • The ability to think creatively/ laterally


  • Excellent communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English


  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a member of a team
