Job Description

Jhpiego is seeking highly motivated Program Officer- Animal Health based in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha for its RISE project to coordinate efforts in tackling the growing challenge of zoonotic diseases. The candidate will play an essential role in supporting the implementation of the project, specifically in the area of animal health. The incumbent will assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of activities related to zoonotic disease prevention, and animal health disease surveillance.

Job Responsibilities

Outbreak Preparedness & Response:

  • Assist in enhancing the outbreak preparedness of the animal health sector at the state and national level
  • Enhance the capacity of animal husbandry staff on outbreak management and response along with community orientation on outbreaks and reporting.
  • Assist in the designing and deployment of associated materials and modules

Zoonotic Disease Spillover - Prevention:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies for preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases at the animal-human interface.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in the animal health sector to enhance disease surveillance, reporting, and response mechanisms.
  • Support community-level engagement and awareness campaigns to mitigate zoonotic disease threats.

Laboratory Confirmation – Enhancement:

  • Assist in enhancing the laboratory diagnosis component of animal health sector through tailored interventions
  • Build the laboratory capacity of animal husbandry at the state level through trainings and facilitating specimen transportation pathways & other ways.

Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination:

  • Collaborate and coordinate with the national and state-level animal health divisions to ensure alignment and synergies with ongoing efforts.
  • Facilitate intersectoral collaboration efforts among animal health, human health, wildlife, and other relevant sectors.
  • Collaborate with veterinary institutions, local partners and relevant stakeholders working on animal health to foster partnerships.

Project Coordination and Implementation:

  • Support the planning and execution of project activities, ensuring alignment with project goals and objectives.
  • Assist in the organization of workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns related to animal health.

Data, documentation and Reporting:

  • Contribute to the collection and analysis of data related to zoonotic diseases, and animal health surveillance.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports detailing project achievements, challenges, and recommendations for further enhancement.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate documentation of project activities and outcomes, contributing to regular progress reporting.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Mandatory: Graduate degree in veterinary sciences. Preferred: Masters/PhD (Veterinary Public Health &/ Epidemiology, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology)
  • Desirable: 2-3 years of relevant experience in animal health, zoonotic diseases, or public
  • Solid understanding of animal health systems, zoonotic disease dynamics, & One Health
  • Thorough understanding of disease epidemiology, surveillance, outbreaks and laboratory systems in animal health.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with diverse
  • Demonstrated analytical skills for data collection and
  • Proficiency in using technology for communication and data
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software and data analysis tools like Bharat Pashudhan
  • Familiarity with the Indian Animal Husbandry system, newer initiatives in the DAHD sector, and relevant government policies/ strategies like LH-DCP.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for workshops and coordination
