Job Description

This position is in the Industry and Economy Division, Resources and Markets Branch (RMB), Consumption and Production Unit (CPU) at the New Delhi duty station. The incumbent will contribute to the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the four-year ‘Accelerating the Transition of the Indian Textile Sector towards Circularity’ project in India. This project is part of the UNEP Textile Initiative portfolio, which aims to transform textiles value chains for enhanced circularity through policies, financial measures, advocacy, and industry practices and norms.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities under this project, bringing expertise on textiles industry (including industrial parks and industrial clusters). 
  • Coordinates with the Indian government on this project, including provision of policy advice as requested, and identifies strategic opportunities for engagement on textiles, beyond the project. 
  • Researches, analyzes, presents information (including statistical data) gathered from diverse sources to assist in policy development and the project. 
  • Provides administrative support and substantive technical guidance for project coordination with the relevant ministries, government departments, selected industry clusters and brands, and relevant agencies in India. 
  • Leads the preparation of various knowledge products such as background papers, analytical notes, reports studies, publications that the project will produce. 
  • Provides administrative support and substantive technical expert contributions to consultative and other meetings, or conferences, including identifying and proposing agenda topics and participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; leads the development of training workshops, seminars; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities in high level events and fora.
  • Participates in and when required leads field missions in India.
  • Uses findings and experiences from this project in India to inform UNEP's regional and global work on textiles. 
  • Act as liaison between the Industry and Economy Division and the UNEP India Office on issues related to textiles in India, including on coordination with other UN agencies, and supports the country office in relevant activities and tasks.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.   
  • Ensures that requirements, background information used for data analysis are documented. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in environmental studies, sustainable development, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.  Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration, or related area is required.    Professional working experience and providing expert advice to governments and industry stakeholders, on environmental sustainability and circularity in textile sector in India or regionally or globally is required.    Professional working experience at international and national level in managing multistakeholder partnerships, including with private sector actors on greening business practices is required.    Experience in industry (including industrial parks and industrial clusters) and in applying life cycle approaches is desirable.    Experience working in the UN system or other international organizations is desirable.    Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, such as UMOJA, is desirable.    Experience in life cycle analysis, or related area is desirable.    Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Hindi is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.  NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.
