Purpose of role: To implement campaign plans and participate in development of the plans and strategies in order to achieve agreed campaign objectives. To develop an understanding and basic campaign issue expertise to be able to represent the organization in  internal and external forums.

Main duties

  • To develop a working knowledge of the assigned campaigns issue and a good understanding of Greenpeace positions on specific areas related to the campaign as may be defined from time to time.
  • To be able to research and communicate internally on issues related to the campaign.
  • To develop a working knowledge of campaign development tools with the support of the manager and campaign trainings.
  • To participate in the planning and strategy development of the specific strand of campaigning with the guidance and support of senior campaigners and/ or the campaign manager.
  • To develop an understanding of, and exposure to, the roles that science, politics, economics, industry, media and social change play and their strategic implications on campaigning through interactions with team members and trainings.
  • To learn to represent Greenpeace at selected external fora related to the issue or campaign strand.
  • To represent the campaign to external NGOs, people in political power, government officials, others to further the objectives of the campaign.
  • To participate, if required, in non violent direct actions on behalf of the campaign and/ or the organisation.

Decisions

  • Most decisions, including work plans of  Campaigners will be managed and supervised by either a Senior Campaigner or a Campaign Manager
  • The person is required to work in line with the processes and the operating guidelines of the organisation.
  • The person is required to be aware of and reflect and not work in conflict with the issue positions held by Greenpeace in internal and external fora.

Contacts – Internal

Liaise with members of the communications/actions/media and FR teams for the purpose of implementing plans.

External

  • Liaise with external service providers independently and with oversight of senior campaigners / campaign managers in some cases.
  • Meet people in the external world to gather information, work together with, lobby and advocate the campaign position at a level that is not critical.

Resources – Finance

Is responsible own finances (eg: travel advance) and not in charge of any budget.

Assets:

Is provided a laptop, data card for work, and occasionally might be responsible for other organisational assets in the course of implementing a plan.

Knowledge and experience

  • At this level, expert knowledge is not required. It is expected that the person will pick up both the issue knowledge as well as campaign skills in the course of the job.
  • The candidate has to show potential and commitment to the campaign at this level and be a “good fit” into Greenpeace as an organisation.
  • The candidate should have good communication skills as it is an essential skill for all campaigners.
  • The candidate should reflect a shift into developing issue knowledge and / or campaign experience and knowledge within a year of being in the junior position.

Organisation Skills  – Planning and organising:

The candidate will mostly be required to manage their own time and work on tasks as signed to them by Senior Campaigners and or Campaign Managers.

Analysis:

  • The candidate will have to show the capacity to analyse information provided to them and encouraged to find ways of digging out information.
  • They will be working in a context which is not entirely defined and have to be able to make inferences and think on their feet. For example, they would have to independently peruse the documents received from a Right to Information petition to highlight aspects that can be used to further the campaign.

Innovation:

Innovation is key to being a good campaigner. The candidate will be expected to be able to ideate in team meetings and help develop robust campaign plans.

The candidate is expected to display initiative in improving their own working methods & approaches.

Working with others:

It is essential for the candidate to work with a team. The candidate will also be required to work with people in other departments in the organisation and coordinate delivery of tasks with them.

The candidate will be required to interact with people at various levels in the organisation in order to deliver tasks and must show comfort in doing so.

Environmental Demands

The candidate might be required to travel frequently and in some cases stay in places other than the city in which the HO is located for long periods of time.

The candidate might have to work under very basic conditions in some places of travel.

Other essential requirements

Commitment to Non Violent Direct Action, as tool to effect change and achieving agreed campaign objectives.
