About the Course

The course is designed for working professionals and the applicant has to be in service in the rank of Commissioned officer from Indian Armed Forces and in the case of Central Paramilitary Forces an applicant has to be in the Rank of Asst. Commandant and above. It also enhances the understanding of the prevailing global security environment and offers an in-depth understanding on strategic affairs relating them to the present global conditions as well as to India’s national security.

About the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies

The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies (DODASS) a pioneering department at the University of Madras, was founded in 1977. It is the first department of its kind in South India to offer Post Graduate and Research Programmes in Strategic and National Security Studies. The department continues to nurture strong academic relations with the Army, Navy and the Air Force, Coast Guard, and other governmental institutions like the DRDO as well as NGOs, think tanks. PME institutions like the NDC, DSSC, and OTA are affiliated to the University of Madras. The department regularly undertakes capacity building programmes for the Police and other organizations.

Private Study

Private study refers to the private mode of instruction where the service personnel are not required to continuously attend classes unlike a regular course. There will be hand-holding and periodic sessions through offline and online modes. The program schedule will be notified by the respective faculty and will follow an Annual Examination Pattern.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant has to be an Indian National.
  • A pass in U.G Degree from a recognized University under regular pattern of study i.e., 10+2+3 or 11+1+3 (in case of three years), the Candidates from the National Defence Academy (NDA) are exempted to produce HSC certificate.
  • The applicant has to be in service in the rank of Commissioned officer from Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air force and Coast Guard) and in the case of Central Paramilitary Forces (CRPF, ITBP, BSF, CISF, SSB, Assam Rifles, NSG) an applicant has to be in the Rank of Asst. Commandant and above.

Examination:

Candidates whose registration has been approved shall apply for the M.A. Defence and Strategic Studies Degree course final examination in the prescribed form together with the prescribed examination fee and be eligible to appear in the final examination. The first year final examination will be held in June 2022 and the second year final examination will be held in June 2023.

 A Candidate has to complete his/her M.A. Defence and Strategic Studies Degree course under Private Study within 5 Academic years from the year of joining. Students who could not complete their degree within the stipulated time and has only 3 arrear papers including Dissertation may be permitted as a Special Case to complete the M.A. Defence and Strategic Studies Degree course with payment of Rs.10,000/- or as prescribed from time to time as a Penal Fee. Such candidates should appear immediately after the expiry of Maximum 5 years and they may be given permission for two appearances (June and December) in the following academic year.

Dissertation and Viva =100 marks (Dissertation: 75 marks, Viva: 25 marks)

 Viva-voce will be conducted in the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, University of Madras, Chennai.

Eligibility to appear for Examination:

Attendance is mandatory for both PCP classes. The minimum period of attendance is 12 days. Only if a candidate attends the Compulsory classes either through online or offline Personal Contact Programme (P.C.P.) he/she will be eligible to appear for the Examination.

  • Those who have not attended both PCP classes and not registered for the examination may be permitted to re-register in the next academic year.
  • Those who have attended PCP classes but failed to register for the examination may be permitted to register for exams at the next opportunity.
  • Those who have attended PCP classes and paid the examination fee but are unable to appear for the examinations due to unforeseen circumstances may be permitted to write their exams next time with subject to paying the exam fee again.

Submission of filled in Application:

 Candidates desiring to register for M.A. Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies under Private Study (Non-Semester Pattern) shall register on or before 30th September 2021 in the prescribed form. (Note : In case of candidates who have qualified in any U.G., degree from other than University of Madras, he /she should pay a Recognition fee of Rs.250/- as
