International Conference on Himalayan Cryosphere
About the Organization:
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public, deemed, research university for higher education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. It is located in Bangalore (Bengaluru), in the Indian state of Karnataka. The institute was established in 1909 with active support from Jamsetji Tata and thus is also locally known as the "Tata Institute”. In 2019, IISc launched its brand statement: "Discover and Innovate; Transform and Transcend; Serve and Lead".
About the Department:
The Divecha Centre for Climate Change was established in January 2009 at Indian Institute of Science with a financial support from Arjun and Diana Divecha and the Grantham Foundation for the protection of the environment. The primary goal of this centre is to understand climate variability and climate change and its impact on the environment. The Centre has undertaken outreach activities to create awareness among people and policy makers about climate change and its consequences.
About the conference:
Organised by Himalayan cryosphere due to large concentration of seasonal snow and glacier provide sustainable source of water for people living in the mountain and in the surrounding plains. However, due to climate change Himalayan region is experiencing higher warming than global mean, causing rapid loss in glacier mass and early melt of seasonal snow, influencing water availability. By considering these aspects, an International Conference is being hosted by Divecha Centre for Climate Change, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
The conference will provide a platform to exchange latest developments in the cryospheric science and the young researchers will get an opportunity to interact with eminent scientists.
Scientific themes and Session:
The session will cover three broad aspects as given below.
- Cryosphere processes, dynamics and climate change
- Cryosphere: risk assessment and mitigation
- Cryosphere research and policy making
Important Dates:
