The Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program (Beahrs ELP) at UC Berkeley seeks to strengthen the capacities of new generations of environmental leaders around the world through access to state-of-the-art knowledge, and opportunities for peer learning, networking, and collaboration on a continuing basis. Beahrs ELP leaders are challenged to meet environmental goals with collaborative and inclusive solutions that also support equity.


About Programe:

The Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program (Beahrs ELP) at the University of California, Berkeley is a rigorous, unique learning experience that transforms mid-career environmental professionals into exceptional leaders. Through exposure to innovative approaches and case studies, ELP participants develop the skills necessary to tackle complex and dynamic environmental issues.Established in 2000 with seed funding from UC Berkeley alumni Carolyn and Richard Beahrs, this three-week intensive interdisciplinary training includes workshops taught by award-winning Berkeley faculty members from the Rausser College of Natural Resources, Haas School of Business, and School of Environmental Design, as well as the departments of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and Agricultural and Resource Economics. In addition, the instructor team includes prominent experts in the areas of green finance, systems leadership, communications, project management, conflict resolution, and consensus building. Upon completion, participants in the Beahrs ELP receive UC Berkeley's certificate in Sustainable Environmental Management, as well as lifetime membership in an alumni network comprising of 731 members from over 114 countries.


Content and Structure:

This UC Berkeley certificate course offers a series of interdisciplinary workshops with a focus on innovation and collaboration.

Workshops are led by Berkeley faculty and industry experts.

Training methods include lectures, small group exercises, role play simulations, debates, participant case studies, panels and presentations and open space sharing.

Our curriculum, including the site visit destinations, is modified slightly each year to meet the changing needs of our participants, and our instructor lineup also changes.

The academic contents of the program are complemented by the leadership development sessions.

From conflict resolution to agile project management, these professional development sessions are led by those who actively lead projects in the environmental fields.

The curriculum is enhanced by field visits that showcase California’s groundbreaking responses to diverse agricultural, natural resource and urban environmental challenges:

  • Santa Cruz: ocean and coastal management 
  • Point Reyes National Seashore: wildlife habitat restoration and economic development
  • Muir Woods National Monument: climate change, forest management, and tourism
  • San Francisco Bay Area: urban development, environmental equity, food security
  • Silicon Valley: innovations in sustainable business

Who Should Attend:

Over the last twenty years (2001-2021), the Beahrs Environmental Leaderhsip Program (Beahrs ELP) has graduated 731 leaders from over 114 countries. Our participants come from a wide range of environmental and sustainable development agencies and organizations, local to global, who share in common the goal to better understand and support sustainable human-environment interactions. We are commited to making this educational opportunity available to professionals from all backgrounds and areas of the world, regardless of their pre-existing resources.

ELP training will benefit environmental professionals from all fields and industries ready to take their careers to the next level through rigorous professional development training and cross-sectoral collaboration. The Beahrs ELP is ideal for people who want intense academic and professional training with world-renowned faculty at UC Berkeley but do not have the time for a full-time 2-year degree.


Eligibility:

  • A resumé that demonstrates strong professional experience and leadership potential;
  • Affiliation with a department or organization concerned with environmental issues;
  • Proficiency in English to allow full participation in course discussions

Cost:

  • The course fee for the 2022 Beahrs ELP is US$7,525.
  • This is lower than our standard program fee, as we are providing housing and meals for two weeks instead of three; however, this also takes into account the additional costs associated with running the program for a longer time overall (from May to July), online infrastructure and licensing, and the work done to update the curriculum to fit a hybrid format.
  • You will be provided with housing and meals for the duration of the two weeks in-person, and will only need to bring the standard USD$400 for incidentals, as well as arrange your own travel (both international and domestic).

Financial Support:

  • Program participants are responsible for seeking their own funding. Participants are encouraged to seek funding from their employers, local /national government, non-governmental agencies at the local, regional and international level as well as sponsorship from foundations.

Beahrs ELP Scholarships:

  • The Beahrs ELP at UC Berkeley has resources to offer a limited number of scholarships. The program will grant partial scholarships of various amounts each year. The amount of the scholarships and the number of recipients will change each year based on the available funds. The scholarships can only be used toward the program fees, which includes lodging and accommodations, and cannot be used for travel or visa application fees.

For each scholarship, we consider the following factors:

  • Financial need
  • Professional experience
  • Commitment and potential to achieve positive change in their community
  • In case of scholarships with specific criteria (e.g. geographical foci), those criteria will be used first.

Beahrs ELP Fellows Program:

  • In addition to the partial scholarships we offer, our donors have created special fellowships for outstanding professionals.
  • The number and amounts of this scholarship vary each year.
  • We will select the fellowship recipients from those who indicated their financial needs in their application.
  • All recipients of Beahrs ELP scholarships and fellowships will be required to fully participate in the program, and may be required to provide specific feedback or participate in meetings.
