TSL Sustainability Challenge 2021

The TSL Sustainability Challenge is a video contest for learners worldwide, organised in parallel with our annual International Schools Essay Competition & Debate. The Sustainability Challenge provides a platform for voices to be heard and recognises and rewards the sustainability ideas, actions and leadership of learners of all ages. The winning videos will be sent to UN Secretary General António Guterres and other leaders in the international community.

Challenge  brief

The TSL Sustainability Challenge is a video contest for learners around the world. For the first time we are opening this competition up to empower learners of all ages, as a platform to share their views and have their voices heard.

Participants are invited to create a short video (max. 1 minute each), either as an individual or a group, showcasing their messages on biodiversity to world leaders and governments before the upcoming COP 15 meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in May 2021.

Entries are invited in 4 categories:

  • Primary (aged 7-11)
  • Secondary (aged 11-17)
  • Tertiary (aged 18+)
  • Teachers (because we never stop learning!)

How to enter

Participants are invited to create a short video, either as an individual or a group, showcasing their messages on biodiversity to world leaders and governments in advance of the fifteenth Conference of Parties (COP 15) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • Registration for the 2021 competition is open now!
  • The maximum length of each video is 1 minute.
  • To upload a video you must be registered as a Teacher Champion. Each Teacher Champion is only able to upload one video.
  • For tertiary and teacher entries (aged 18+): To submit your video you must register as a Teacher Champion.
  • Primary and secondary entries (aged 7-17): Must be submitted on behalf of students by a registered Teacher Champion. If you wish to submit multiple entries from your school, parents or legal guardians can also register as Teacher Champions.
  • All video submissions must be uploaded to YouTube (Teacher Champions will be asked to provide the relevant YouTube link)
  • Login and tell us the YouTube link to your video entry by 28 February 2021.
  • Please ensure that the  following information is included in your video title: #TSLBiodiversity2021 Sustainability Challenge –  Primary/Secondary/Tertiary/Teacher (please delete as appropriate)

Judging criteria

  • The Sustainability Challenge is judged on the quality of the messages featured in the videos and how the messages are presented. Simplicity is no barrier and videos filmed on mobile phones or tablets are warmly encouraged.
  • Social media responses to the videos are taken into account during the judging process and must include the hashtag #TSLBiodiversity2021.  Viewers are invited to show support for their favourite videos on YouTube.

  • 8 September 2020: Registration opens for 2021 Challenge
  • 28 February 2021: Deadline for Challenge video entries
  • 1 May 2021: Announcement of 2021 Challenge video winners
