About the Organization

The AAV has more than 1700 members comprised of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary students, and allied professionals that work in private practice, colleges and universities, zoos, government, and industry. Many of the AAV’s members are considered global leaders in avian conservation and wild bird health. The AAV strives to preserve and protect birds in the wild and their native habitats.

About the Grant

Pre-proposals for research projects addressing wild bird health are now being accepted for consideration for funding by the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV). Projects of interest include but are not limited to epidemiology of disease in wild populations, ecotoxicology, diagnostic testing and treatment of wild birds, and conservation medicine. Grants are limited to $5,000.00 US for individual projects.

Project Guidelines

The full project, or portion of the project for which funding is requested, must be completed within one (1) calendar year upon acceptance.

Costs such as travel expenses, publication costs, investigator or assistant salaries, major equipment purchases, and overhead shall not be funded by the AAV.

All prospective research studies funded by the AAV must receive full approval by the facility’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or equivalent research review entity. If IACUC (or equivalent) approval is pending at the time of full proposal submission to the AAV, proof of subsequent complete approval must be made available to the AAV before funds can be released for the research project.

Although not a mandatory requirement for funding, selected investigators are strongly encouraged to publish their results in the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery (JAMS) and/or submit presentation proposals for the annual conference of the AAV. Selected investigators may be granted a 12-month extension provided a written research update is provided to AAV at the end of the first calendar year from funding. All investigators will be required to submit a final research report as described in the AAV Research Project Final Report template.

How to Apply

Please direct submission to the AAV Executive Director, Robert Groskin: grants.awards.scholarships@aav.org.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure delivery of the pre-proposal.
