About the Organization:

Mama Cash supports women’s, girl’s and Trans groups with funds, knowhow, and networking opportunities. They’re on a mission, courageous women’s, girls', Trans and intersex people’s human rights organisations worldwide need funding and supportive networks in order to grow and transform their communities.

Mama Cash Grantmaking Programme 2021

Feminist activists have the vision and the power to transform the world. But they often lack the funding, supportive networks, and access to learning opportunities they need to maximise the impact they have and transform their communities and nations. Mama Cash’s mission is to fill that gap.

Mama Cash provides funding and accompaniment support to courageous and inspiring feminist activists worldwide. They make grants to groups and movements that have the conviction and tenacity to speak out, tell their stories and demand justice, no matter the obstacles. They are building the power and strength of the international women’s funding movement by supporting sister women’s funds worldwide.

Leading their own movements:

They aim to put resources in the hands of activists who are advancing their own rights and building their own movements for social change. They prioritise groups led by people working together to address issues they experience directly, like domestic workers who are collectively organising for decent work or trans people who are building a movement to secure bodily autonomy.

Thematic portfolios:

They provide most of our grants through three thematic portfolios –Body, Money and Voice. Our accompaniment grants provide groups opportunities to strengthen their skills, knowledge and networks. Opportunity grants enable us to demonstrate solidarity or play a part in supporting initiatives that reflect our values, vision and mission, but fall outside our other grantmaking criteria.

• Mama Cash gives grants to over 150 forward-thinking initiatives led by women, girls, trans people and intersex people around the world annually.

General Information:

• Mama Cash offers core support grants, which can also include support for specific programmes, projects, or initiatives.
• Mama Cash gives both single-year and multi-year grants. Each multi-year grant period runs for a maximum of two years. Do note that for an organisation or initiative we have not supported before, Mama Cash always starts with a single-year grant.
• Mama Cash’s grant size ranges from €5.000 to €50.000 per year. Our average grant size is between €20.000 and €30.000 per year.
• Mama Cash is open to supporting informal, unregistered groups of activists, or networks, or coalitions of organisations.

Mama Cash Criteria for Funding:

Mama Cash supports groups and initiatives that:

• Work from a feminist and/or women's rights perspective
• Are self-led by the women, girls, trans people and/or intersex they serve
• Have the promotion of women’s, girls’, trans people and/or intersex people’s human rights as their primary mission, and not just as the focus of part of their programmes
• Push for structural and fundamental change
• Focus on issues that are under-addressed and/or contested

Mama Cash’s Priorities and Focus:

Mama Cash makes grants in most countries of the world. Even though contexts are significantly different, they found that concerns of some specific groups of women, girls, trans and intersex people tend to be under-addressed and/or contested in most societies (and social movements). So these groups are often found among our grantees.

In 2020, they invite Letters of Interest from groups and organisations that meet the following criteria:

• Have an annual budget below 200,000 euros
• Mama Cash does not prioritise providing financial support to larger groups. As a result, among our grantee-partners in the thematic portfolios you will find only very few groups that have annual budgets over 200,000 euros.
• Work on the nexus of women’s, girls’, trans and intersex people’s rights and environmental justice, for example, groups that address the exclusion of indigenous women from decision-making over their land and groups that fight for their right to water, food, and a clean, safe, and healthy environment.

Mama Cash will receive Letters of Interest from applicants who are not current grantee-partners from 1 March - 31 March 2021, 11:59 pm CEST. Groups that apply during this grantmaking window will receive a response from Mama Cash by 1 July 2021.
