Applications Invited for Next Challenge Grant 2023
Organization: Tim Moss The Next Challenge
Apply By: 31 Jan 2023
Grant Amount: 2000 Pound
About the Organization
Tim Moss set up The Next Challenge in 2009 after people kept asking what his next challenge was. He offers free expedition resources, an annual expedition grant and a range of ebooks.
Tim has organised expeditions to all seven continents, made first and first-British ascents of several mountains from Russia to Bolivia, and has travelled around the world using eighty methods of transport, a trip for which he won the Year Of The Volunteer ‘Award for Innovation’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Guinness World Record breaker and was shortlisted as ‘Adventurer of the Year’.
About the Grant
The Next Challenge Grant is an annual bursary for adventures. It was started in 2015 and has funded over 70 different adventures. The money comes from me (Tim Moss), small crowdfunded donations and contributions from other adventurers.
I received many expedition grants when I was younger and they helped me undertake some fantastic adventures, which have shaped the person I am today. I am now in a position where I can give something back.
In 2015 this website earned £200 in advertising revenue and I decided to offer that as a grant. When I announced my intention, lots of other ‘adventurers’ offered to match my pledge, and 100 members of the public donated £2 each to do the same. We raised £1,600.
That process now happens every year and we typically raise around £2,000. The money is distributed between the winning applicants, each receiving between £100 and £800 (plus kit). Anyone can apply.
Eligibility
The grant is open to all ages, all backgrounds and all nationalities.
The following are the basic rules that need to be adhered. To be eligible for the grant, all trips must:
- Happen in 2022
- Be independently organised
- Be for adventure not science
- Involve physical exertion
- Usually involve camping
- Be original: It is hard to define what is original and what isn’t. But the most common applications that fall foul of this are -
- Mountaineering trips. Particularly up well-known peaks. Climbing is great but it’s often hard for others to relate to and there are also lots of other grants available for climbing trips (e.g. BMC/MEF).
- Cycle tours. I have funded many bike trips (see here) but they tend to be slightly different to just cycling from A to B. I love cycle touring but it’s unlikely to get you a grant.
- Popular routes. Applications to travel well-known walking trails, cycle routes and the like are unlikely to get funding without an original angle.
- Not be for equipment
