About the Organization

The Van Tienhoven Foundation for International Nature Protection makes small grants available for the protection and conservation of threatened species and ecosystems across the globe.

Our mission & vision

We are concerned about life on earth, the well-being and maintenance of the variety of living organisms and their living environment. Human beings play a crucial role as actor and factor in biodiversity. We see people as instrumental in mitigating the pressures of global change on the living environment and biodiversity.

• We make small grants available to finance direct actions on species, ecosystem, and community managed nature protection that lead to change in policy and practice.
• We promote knowledge into the causes of threats and pressures on nature, in order to generate concrete actions that halt, counteract or mitigate these causes;
• We strive to influence and collaborate with governmental, non-governmental organisations, communities, individuals, and other relevant stakeholders for the sake of the conservation of nature.

About the Grant

The Van Tienhoven Foundation (co-)sponsors projects with a maximum of €10,000 through an annual call for proposals.

The Van Tienhoven Foundation makes small grants available for the protection of threatened species and key ecosystems across the globe.

International Nature Protection

• We counter human-induced causes of threats to species and ecosystems. By supporting practical and hands-on solutions with maximum protection impact. Owned or widely supported by local stakeholders to generate sustainable change.

Species protection

• Animal and plant species are a key part of our planet’s biodiversity. Some species are “flagship species”. Other species can profit from their protection. Species can play a crucial role in the balance of a natural system: if these species disappear, that system may collapse.

Ecosystem protection

• Key ecosystems, such as forests, coral reefs or wetlands, provide the living conditions for groups of species. These systems are under pressure, threatened and may require protection to prevent them from disappearing or deteriorating in a for living organisms less functional state.

Community managed nature protection

• Involving communities in conserving biodiversity is essential if we want to succeed in safeguarding our environment. Only when communities see the benefit of stable species populations and ecosystems, we may achieve a world where humans live in harmony with nature, without threatening species, ecosystems, or local livelihoods.

Eligibility

We use the following eligibility criteria and only accept applications:

• From not-for-profit organisations, that are registered as legal bodies (NGOs and scientific institutions). We don’t accept applications from government bodies, private companies or individuals.
• Not-for-profit organisations must have a bank account in their organisations name, and able to receive international funds.
• Only one application per organisation will be taken into consideration for each call for proposals. If an organisation has been given a grant before, a final report must have been submitted for any project previously supported by the Van Tienhoven Foundation. An organisation can be supported for a maximum of three times within eight years.
• From organisations with a track record in species protection, ecosystem protection and/or community managed nature protection, that can be demonstrated by background documentation (e.g. websites, social media, annual and/or final project delivery reports).
• Implemented in developing countries, predominantly following the most recent DAC list of ODA Recipients.
• With costs based on local rates. Costs of salaries and consultancy fees based on rates outside the countries of implementation are not covered. Travel costs (from) outside the countries of implementation are not covered. The purchase of vehicles (e.g. cars, boats) is not supported. We do not support overhead costs.
• Where actions are not part of a study leading to any academic title and/or aimed at delivering a book.
• Of projects that have not started yet at the time of submission and with a project time span of two years maximum.
• Projects requesting a maximum budget of €10,000 euro from the Van Tienhoven Foundation and a total project budget of no more than €50,000 euro. Applicants have to indicate co-funding in the budget if applicable. If projects are to be co-sponsored by the Van Tienhoven Foundation, a financing plan has to be added which includes incontestable evidence of subsidies already applied for and awarded by other organisations.

How to Apply 

The following application process is used:

• Grantseekers start the application process by submitting a project proposal through the online application form (only available within the set time frame for the specific call for proposals). Only completed application forms in English will be accepted. To help you prepare your application you may download this Word document docx.
• Upon submission, grantseekers agree with the privacy policy of the van Tienhoven Foundation, and agree that (meta) data from the application may be published in the public domain via a Creative Commons license CC-BY-4.0 with proper citation to the grantseekers organization. The Van Tienhoven Foundation will provide the grantseeker with information prior to such publication.
• All applications will be checked in respect to the eligibility criteria. Applications that do not meet these criteria will not be proceeding to the assessment phase.
• All applications that pass the eligibility criteria will be assessed based on assessment criteria. The Board of the Van Tienhoven Foundation performs these assessments unremunerated and may involve unremunerated external specialists in these assessments. After the assessment of applications, the Board may form a set of shortlisted applications.
• The shortlisted applications will be contacted by the Board. Additional information is requested from each applicant at this stage. Applicants are requested to supply the names of two independent referees. The Board may at this stage also seek additional unremunerated referees to appraise applications.
• Based on all information provided the Board makes a final selection of projects to be funded.
• Applicants will receive a decision by the Board within twelve weeks after the submission deadline. Decisions are at the discretion of the Board and arguments will not be given for positive or negative decisions.
