About the Organization

With a national goal of ‘making WASH poverty a history in India’, WaterAid India has been implementing projects to secure WASH rights of the most marginalised population of the country. WaterAid India (WAI) is registered as Jal Seva Charitable Foundation (JSCF) in India. The organisation commenced its operations in 1986 (in India) and since then, has been engaged in demonstrating scalable models on WASH. WAI recognises access to WASH as a basic human right and believes that with right political will and deployment of resources this right can be secured for everyone.

Since the last FOUR decades, WAI has carved a niche among key organisations working on WASH in India through constant sector engagement. It has years of understanding on WASH and allied sectors of health, nutrition, education, community development and local governance. Recently the organisation has adopted an integrated approach to WASH development and refined its strategies to ensure that all demands for WASH are met through intensive resource deployment.

About the Proposal

WAI has been working in south India across TWO States in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for different interventions to address the problems related to sustainable access to safe water for communities.

While in Andhra Pradesh we are working in districts of Chittoor and Guntur to ensure access to safe water and hygiene, which will benefit over 15,000 people, in Karnataka, we are working in Gulbarga and Raichur districts, to adopt sustainable measures that will ensure the maintenance of groundwater levels. Overall, the projects aim to capture improved access to safe water throughhousehold connections, water replenishment through water conservation methods such as rainwater harvesting, decentralised storage and integration of groundwater recharge structures in key community institutions.

Both projects have elements of Water Harvesting and Recharge: Enhanced water conservation through community-managed rainwater harvesting and recharge measures; Sustainability of services and infrastructures through community-based Operation and Maintenance at their core and are aligned to the goals and outcomes of the government’s flagship programme Jal Jeevan Mission.

The projects would aim to demonstrate the benefits received by the community in regard to accessible and sustainable measures of clean drinking water and ground water recharge. To this effect, WaterAid India will be planning a Photo + text based case study documentation in the month of January 2022, to meet with beneficiaries and members of the respective communities in the villages in these districts to capture their testimonies of how the interventions have benefitted them.

An expression of Interest will be invited for suitable Consultants who can be engaged for case study documentation in text-based/written format.

Key Themes to be covered in the documentation:

Based on the above requirements, WaterAid India would be listing down the requirements as below which need to be covered in the case studies:

  • Community managed piped water supply – This should include how some drinking water schemes that are up and running and the community is maintaining the system. It should cover how the community is addressing the plans for O&M even prior to the schemes being implemented.
  • Source sustainability – Efforts undertaken at a community level to help ensure sustainability of the source through rainwater harvesting measures, recharge of dug wells etc.
  • Groundwater recharge measures: In some of the selected areas, we should be able to identify and demonstrate via examples how the groundwater levels in those villages/ districts have improved over a period of time due to the interventions.
