About the Organization

The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) delivers research-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity and sustainably transform food systems to improve people’s lives. Alliance solutions address the global crises of malnutrition, climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

With novel partnerships, the Alliance generates evidence and mainstreams innovations to transform food systems and landscapes so that they sustain the planet, drive prosperity, and nourish people.

About the Proposal

This qualitative data collection is intended to provide baseline data and complement quantitative data collection for the CGIAR Initiative “Nature-Positive Solutions for Shifting Agrifood Systems to More Resilient and Sustainable Pathways.” The main research questions for the overall study are:

  • What is the true cost of food production systems, considering externalities related to human/health, social, and ecological/environmental costs and benefits?
  • What policy and investment recommendations can be made to promote nature-positive solutions for more equitable and sustainable agri-food production systems?
  • What are the short-term impacts of nature-positive solutions on human, health, social, and ecological/environmental dimensions?

Through qualitative interviews and focus group discussions in selected communities where a quantitative household survey will be implemented at the same time, the qualitative data will assess:

  • Perceptions of the costs and benefits of current production practices (health, social, and environmental costs and benefits)
  • Awareness and perceptions of nature-positive solutions
  • Constraints to adoption of nature-positive solutions

Interviews and focus groups will be conducted separately with men and women (with different attributes based on age, marital status etc.) to understand differences in how current production practices are perceived, how the costs and benefits of these practices are distributed, as well as the potential for and gender-differentiated constraints to adoption of a selected set of nature-positive solutions. The set of nature-positive solutions to be discussed will be decided, based on initial prioritization by the initiative.

The selected firm will be responsible for coordinating and conducting face-to-face qualitative data collection among farming households and communities in the state of Maharashtra in India (Akole block of Ahmednagar district and Shahada block of Nandurbar district in Maharashtra). The qualitative survey will consist of 20 in-person interviews and 20 focus groups with men and women farmers (lasting 90–120 minutes). The Alliance and IFPRI, who will supervise the technical work, will work closely with the Nature+ India country coordination team. Exact instruments and methods/tools to be used will be decided in collaboration with the Alliance and IFPRI, Nature+ India country coordination team, and the data collection firm.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with IFPRI and the Nature + team of researchers to finalize the protocols for data collection and pilot these in the field;
  • Translate interview and focus group protocols and informed consent statement into local languages (as needed);
  • Obtain local ethics clearance, research permits, and/or other local approvals. IFPRI will obtain institutional ethics clearance;
  • Organize the selection, hiring, and payment of facilitators experienced in qualitative data collection to conduct the required focus groups and interviews. This will include hiring both male and female facilitators with the necessary language skills to ensure respondents for the individual interviews and focus groups are matched on sex;
  • With assistance from IFPRI, provide training to the facilitators and note takers in how to conduct the interviews and focus groups. Each protocol will have specific instructions for the data collection approach. Following training, protocols will be pretested in collaboration with IFPRI staff. IFPRI and the selected firm will jointly consider the COVID-19 implications of whether IFPRI staff conducting the training will do so in-person or virtually. It is expected that there will be 3 days of training, including 1 day of training, 1 day of pre-testing, and 1 day for debriefing;
  • Develop a field schedule for the qualitative data collection teams and provide regular status updates during fieldwork;
  • Participate in weekly meetings with IFPRI throughout data collection;
  • All interviews and focus groups should be recorded (pending consent from the participants), transcribed verbatim and translated into English immediately following data collection. (If the participant does not consent to the recording, a note taker should take as detailed notes as possible.) Transcripts should be delivered to IFPRI in Word format;
  • Provide responses to queries from IFPRI in relation to data analysis and translation (as needed);
  • Provide a brief report covering qualitative survey fieldwork, as well as any issues related to implementation.

Eligibility
