About the Organization:

Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. They work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations, and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions

Background of the assignment:

Room to Read’s (RtR) Girls’ Education Program (GEP) ensures that girls complete secondary school and have the skills to negotiate key life decisions. In India, since 2004, the program has benefitted over 14000 girls across 7 states- Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Uttarakhand. Over the years, the program has witnessed powerful stories of change, has led to best practices to learn from, and innovative strategies to celebrate and share. Our program reinforces girls’ commitment to their own education, works with girls to develop essential life skills and increases support for girls’ education among their parents, school staff, and communities.

With the current situation on the backdrop, there would be a probability of limited physical movement and engagement at the field level; so, these activities are part of the communication plan within a comprehensive strategy to build and create momentum about the program amongst the stakeholders on different aspects of gender and life skills education. These materials will be instrumental in sharing the content in reader friendly way to emphasis on the importance of life skills. Besides that, will be instrumental in uplifting parents’ motivation to educate their daughters, along with addressing different issues like child marriage, gender in equality etc. With this in the backdrop, RTR plan to develop various products on different aspects of gender, girl’s education and most importantly on life skills for the parents.

Scope of Work and expectation:

The consultant is expected to design veracious e-learning materials for families of adolescent girls under RTR’s Girls’ Education Program. The graphic designer will work in close coordination with the programs team to design, illustrate and create content for innovative products and contribute in the improvement of existing materials and designs.

The consultant is expected to:

  • Conceptualize the products based on the table mentioned above, design the products and Write the content considering expectations from the end users; making adaption to the way the session is structured. 
  • Conceptualize for the illustration that supplements the content and should be gender balanced, child friendly for all the IECs
  • Ensure that the content and the structure of the product is user friendly and visually appealing from the point of view of usage by the families.
  • The consultant is also expected to review and bring in additional material to overall make the deliveries interesting and comprehensive.
  • The content should be in Hindi (bol chaal ki bhasa). The final content should be proofread and completely error free.
  • The consultant will be responsible for designing and laying out of the IECs in a reader-friendly and innovative manner and placing illustrations wherever appropriate, required and expected. The consultant will also be responsible for formatting and layout of the text including making text editions once the layout is done
  • The consultants need to consider the feedback received from the program team while developing the products
  • The product will not be considered final until the RtR approves it. It may require several rounds of re-iteration or feedback.
  • Preparing a print ready and mobile friendly file of each IECs. Designing and formatting will be in line with Room to Read’s branding guidelines

Key Deliverables:

The graphic designer will be notified via email with a description of the task as and when the requirement arises. The assignment shall be completed within Room to Read branding guidelines and within specified deadlines. The consultant will deliver the material in following format:

  • CDR/ InDesign Format / Photoshop
  • PDF /JPeg
  • E- friendly version

Tenure & Payment Terms:

  • The consultant is expected to provide the cost per product; this assignment is valid till 31st December 2021 from the date of signing the contract. This is a rate contract and designer will be empaneled with RtR. The assignment will be shared with the designer as and when needed. The payments will be made product wise. 
  • The consultant will need to provide services to complete the assigned tasks in a given timeframe as will be mutually agreed to during the contract period.

Location:

The consultant will be home based but might require travelling to Room to Read’s Delhi office in Dwarka, if feasible. Otherwise, the consultant should be available for frequent discussions over phone or any online medium.

Experience Required:

  • The consultant should a strong lens of gender equality cemented in their work. The consultant must have demonstrable experience in developing products on the subject of life skills.

Other specific requirements:

  • Must have created communication materials for NGOs
  • Theoretical and practical experience of design software like Adobe Design Premium, In-Design, Photoshop, Coral Draw and web design tools.
  • Have knowledge and experience in creating e-content.
  • At least 5 years of work experience in graphic designing
  • Access to graphic design software and equipment
  • Knowledge of new evolving technology
  • Proficiency in both Hindi and English
