About the Organization:

Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. They work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations, and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions.

Girls Education Program, Telangana:

Room to Read India Trust is currently implementing a School Library Program and a Girls’ Education Program in Telangana state since 2008. The Girls’ Education Program is being implemented in 11 schools across Telangana State. Since its inception in unified Andhra Pradesh, about 2597 girls have benefitted from the program. The program has been supported by teachers and Education Department officials from across the state.

The program is a combination of to direct implement on and technical assistance with the government of Telangana, to create sustainable, large scale gender equity throughout the state. Room To Read is developing an Acclimatization Package for its program in the Warber Pincus Project in Telangana. It emerges out of one of the key strategies of the ongoing program in Telangana which is to provide gender responsive Life Skills Education across the state. The strategy involves taking cognizance of Covid-19 and disseminating learning materials best suited to foster learning of the marginalized children. In this context this acclimatization package in the shape of a module will be developed for the children

About Acclimatization Package:

The Acclimatization Package is designed as a self-learning material which the children can use to adjust and, in a way, acclimatize to the new normal amidst the grave difficulty of the pandemic. The package supports them in coping with the changing/new situations in the pandemic crisis before the school reopens. The package has been visualized in the form of an illustrative storybook and each story having 8-12 pages will have illustrations aligned with the content.

Scope of Work and expectation:

The consultant is expected to contribute to illustration development of the Acclimatization Package. The consultant is expected to come up with illustrations of two storybooks total having 11 stories (total of both the storybooks). The word file of the stories of the package will be provided to the consultant. The stories are based on a thematic matrix and stories are developed by an expert.

The target audience of this story package is children in the age group of 10-14(early adolescence) and 15-18 years (late adolescence). The illustration development, designing and layout are part of the assignment. A teacher’s guide which is an offshoot of the story package will have to be given basic designing and layout.

Overall Expectations:

  • Conceptualize and design the illustrations of 11 stories that are in sync with the storyline, characters, and narratives.
  • There would be about 8-12 pages in each story including the title page.
  • The target audience of this story package is children in the age group of 10-14 (early adolescence) and 15-18(late adolescence).
  • Conceptualize and design the mother cover page of the package.
  • Basic designing and layout of the Teacher’s Guide. The teacher’s guide has some activities that the teachers would have to do in person with the children as the schools re-open.
  • Conceptualize for the basic designing and formatting that supplements the content and should be gender balanced, child friendly for all the content.
  • Ensure that the design is in line with the content with the overall structure being user friendly and visually appealing from the point of children.
  • The word document of the stories will be provided by RTR.
  • Consider this as end to end process for illustration development incorporating the feedback for overall characters and illustrations.
  • The consultant to be open to feedback during the process of design.
  • Provide the print ready deliverable in PDF and CDR format. Designing and formatting will be in line with Room to Read’s branding guidelines.
  • There would be one additional page for every story which would have self-reflection activities for children. Basic designing and layout of this page would be done.
  • The illustrator must not limit to the ideas provided in the document and add to the creative development.
  • The preferred treatment of the illustrations shall be digital and manual.

Points to be considered:

  • Each illustration shows an interesting and engaging moment of the story.
  • Characters match the age, physical features, personality, social background, time period, and abilities mentioned in the text.
  • Character shows unique and memorable identifying characteristics that make it distinct from other characters.
  • The setting matches the text. If the setting was not specified, it makes sense with the nature and tone of the story.

Key Deliverables

  • Illustration development for two storybooks.
  • Designing and development of Teacher’s Guide.

Timeline: 45 days from date of contract.

Note:

  • For all the above-mentioned scope of work there will be a minimum of 3 to 4 rounds of feedbacks and suggestions that will come from Room to Read on each session and the consultant should be open to that
  • The consultant will need to provide services and complete tasks based on the timelines as outlined in this ToR and as will be mutually agreed to during the contract finalization.

Experience and qualification:

  • The consultant must have strong expertise in developing illustrations for children, designing and layout.
  • The consultant must have prior experience in conceptualizing illustrations on socially relevant themes that cater in an age appropriate manner to children.
