About the Organization

Sesame Workshop - India is the Indian arm of Sesame Workshop, the internationally renowned nonprofit media and educational organization behind Sesame Street, the pioneering television show that has been reaching and teaching children since 1969. We reach kids in their earliest years to provide them access to life-changing early education, critical health lessons, and helpful tools for tough situations via a combination of television, radio, digital media, mobile technologies, and community outreach across 11 states in India. Since 2006, Sesame Workshop - India has reached children through mass media including Galli Galli Sim Sim, the local version of Sesame Street, and now reaches children with engaging and educational content featuring the beloved Muppets of Sesame Street.

About the Proposal

SWI will develop an inclusive curriculum linked to outcomes of mental well-being and foundational literacy and numeracy learning outcomes to enable 3,500 children between 3-8 years of age to develop appropriate social relationships and interpersonal skills; a sense of self awareness, identity and belonging; and a healthy management of emotions during adversity. They will also be able to develop and retain developmentally appropriate language and communication skills; emergent reading and writing skills; basic cognitive skills such as senses, logical thinking and problem solving; and mathematical skills and competencies.

In partnership with community radio stations based out of three districts in Rajasthan, viz., Banswara, Hanumangarh and Sirohi, CBB aims to achieve the following:

  • Develop inclusive curriculum and collaterals: SWI has developed age-appropriate and interactive radio episodes on literacy and numeracy and mental wellbeing that have segments for both children and adults. The radio episodes are designed to address a specific audience group per segment. The adult segments incorporate required elements of capacity building and tools to help parents/caregivers to support children’s learning at home while making sure that children receive joyful learning materials through the audio broadcast, as well as in group and at home interactions. The radio broadcast is expected to reach a population of 3.5 – 5 lakhs.
  • Partnership with CR stations: SWI has partnered with CR stations to initiate conversations about role of community, caregivers in providing appropriate environment to young children for their overall well-being. The CR partnership will be for a period of 18 months with three CR stations in the following 3 intervention districts.

Name of District: Sirohi, Banswara, Hanumangarh

Name of Community Radio Station: Radio Madhuban, Radio Vagad, Radio Chetna

Each CRs has identified and brought on board 4 field facilitators, who are responsible for scheduled interactions with children, caregivers and communities. Over a period of 16 months (starting May 2022), fortnightly workshops are being held with 3500 children and caregivers (1200 per CRS) to achieve the identified educational outcomes. By end of September 2022, we anticipate that each CRs would have completed nine engagement workshops with the participants.

Further, SWI will provide 60-70 audio segments (of 5 minutes each) to the CRs. Broadcast of the SWI audio segments was initiated in March 2022, and by end September, it is anticipated that 30 audio segments would have been broadcast on the three CRs.
