In India, there are less than seven doctors for every 10,000 people. The situation seemed grim and needed urgent attention. In Maharashtra alone 31548 infant deaths have been reported in a period of 17 months. 2,00,000 children are born with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) every year. Hearing Impairment affects over 10,00,000 children who are awaiting hearing implantation. Cerebral Palsy affects 15-20% of physically handicapped children. Epilepsy affects 3/1000 Indian children and many of them require surgery. 40,000 – 50,000 cancer cases are detected every year in children below 18 years of age.

There was a need for an institution to step forward and make quality healthcare accessible to all children. SRCC Children’s Hospital, managed by Narayana Health based in Mumbai has taken the initiative to take care of the healthcare of underprivileged children of the society; catering to the healthcare of children personifies hope and happiness. SRCC Narayana Children’s Hospital exists to make sure every child get the healthcare, he or she deserves because what can be more important than the health and smile of a child?

The hospital conducts over one hundred free or subsidized paediatric surgeries every month; arranges for micro-insurance schemes and much more. They have initiated all these schemes in pursuit of improving childcare through a number of initiatives. SRCC has made significant progress in child health in India. Till now 550 heart surgeries have been conducted, out of which 514 surgeries were fully or partly funded by philanthropic institutions.

Another huge problem affecting children in India is Cancer. In good number of cases, cancer can be cured by bone marrow transplant. With the support of Narayana Health, SRCC established a bone marrow transplant centre. With the launch of BMT service, SRCC Children’s Hospital will be able to offer the most critical treatment to children suffering from leukaemia and many other cancers as well as non-cancerous conditions such as Aplastic Anaemia, Thalassemia, certain neurological disorders etc.

The BMT service was inaugurated by legendary cricketer and India’s highest Civilian Award recipient Mr. Sachin Tendulkar and Dr. Anjali Tendulkar. Their presence will help create awareness about how India needs more BMT donors to save lives of lakhs of children.

Narayana Health has always believed in offering quality healthcare services that are affordable to all. In a short span of time, the hospital has emerged as a preferred provider for quality healthcare not just in Mumbai, but also for the region.
