Capacity Building Workshop for Early Career Researchers on Issues and Challenges of Urban Sector in India

Introduction

India is striving to recast its urban landscape of the country to make cities investment friendly and at the same time inclusive. The new urban transformation strategies of India are guided by the twin objectives of meeting the challenges of urbanization in the country following the policy mandates of the neo-liberal regime and at the same time ensuring that the benefits of urban development leaves no one behind - making equitable access to urban infrastructure and decent employment opportunities a sine qua non for sustainable development. In this context, it becomes important for the new generation of urban researchers to develop a clear macro perspective of urbanisation and its multi-faceted manifestation so that future strategies and decisions could address urban challenges in a holistic and sustainable manner.

 

NIUA in partnership with University of Glasgow (UK) and Centre for Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University is organising a one week capacity building programme for early career researchers in this regard. The programme will help young researchers to have first-hand experience and knowledge about the urban sector and its growing multidimensional challenges. The programme also aims to strengthen the capacity of researchers to undertake evidence based urban research; to use data analytics and research to influence urban planning, policy and practice and promote project proposal formulation and management skills.

 

Programme Content

The course content will broadly consists of:

 

  • Introduction to the Global Discourse on Sustainable Urban Development and New Urban Agenda
  • Emerging Urbanisation Patterns and Growth in India vis-à-vis Global Trends
  • Urban Governance
  • Approaches of Urban Planning
  • Urban Data Sources: Conventional and Big Data
  • Block-Chain Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Urban Management
  • Urban Infrastructure Financing : Challenges and Prospects
  • Urban Health and Education
  • Land Policies, Housing and Slums
  • Environment, Climate Change and Resilience
  • Monitoring and Evaluation Techniques
  • Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in urban sector
  • Project Management, Proposal writing and budgeting
  • Negotiation and Conflict Management Skills
  • Solid Waste Management : Technical Site Visits

 

NIUA will invite distinguished scholars, academicians and practitioners to guide early career researchers to understand the changing dynamics of urban development in the country. The training will be a mix of classroom sessions, lectures, case studies, field visits and hands-on-training.

 

Programme Outcome

Upon completion of the programme, candidates will be given 10 days’ time to formulate a research paper proposal on topics related to urban studies. A few of the best proposals will be facilitated to develop a full-fledged research paper. The publication of the same will also be facilitated. A financial assistance of INR 10,000/-  will also be provided to undertake the research.

 

Eligibility Criteria

The target group of the programme are early career researchers. Candidates pursing their PhD (at least PhD synopsis should be approved by research committee), and those who have submitted their thesis and awaiting defense will be considered.  Practitioners with two years of experience may be considered. The total number of participants shall be limited to 30.

 

Travel and Accommodation

Travel and accommodation expenses of the selected candidates (outside Delhi) will be borne by the organisers. The selected candidates will be paid for the economy class airfare, AC II Tier train fare or bus by the shortest route. Participants will be provided accommodation near the training venue on twin sharing basis.

 

Location

The programme will be held at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. Weather of Delhi in May is hot, maximum temperature will be approximately 380C-400C.

 

How to Apply

Interested participants should fill an online application form available on NIUA’s website. (link) . The participants have to upload their curriculum vitae, research proposal, and recommendation letter from their supervisor and a bonafide certificate from the head of the department or any competent authority of the University/Institute. High weightage will be given to the research proposal while selecting the participants.  Selected candidates will have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 1500/-.
