To develop a nation, it is important to develop its women. In recent years, India has seen quite a number of initiatives on women empowerment, undertaken by corporate houses. Here is the list of 10 best CSR initiatives in women empowerment implemented in FY 2017-18.

1. Capacity Building of Women

Prescribed CSR of the Company in FY 2017-18: INR 290.47 Cr.

ITC Limited’s initiative has provided a range of gainful employment opportunities to over 61,000 poor women, who have been supported with capacity building and financial assistance by way of loans and grants. Till date, 20,100 ultra-poor women in the core catchments has access to sustainable sources of income through non-farm livelihood opportunities. In addition, the programme provided a source of livelihood to 325 women in Uttar Pradesh engaged in making incense sticks using pedal machines to boost supplementary income to them.

2. Livelihood generation of rescued trafficked women

Name of the Company: IndusInd Bank Limited

Prescribed CSR of the Company in FY 2017-18: INR 70.17 Cr.

Amount Spent on the Project: INR 11.63 Cr.

Location: Bihar

IndusInd Bank has partnered with Justice & Care, (NGO working in the space of rehabilitation of women rescued from trafficking) for the rehabilitation and skill development of women rescued from trafficking in Gaya, Nalanda and Nawada districts of Bihar. The Bank is focusing on education, preferably skill-based and margin & seed funding, to the women in order to enhance their livelihood prospects which will increase their income and decrease the vulnerability of possible victims and their families.

3. Project Salon-i

Godrej Consumer Products Limited's project Salon-i trains young girls and women in beauty and hair care. Over 62,000 women have graduated from this programme in the fiscal year 2017-18. The programme was operational in 300 centres across India. The curriculum is integrated with life skills and entrepreneurial modules to equip the candidates in starting their own enterprise if they are so interested. The curriculum has been digitised and is available as audiovisual content Through partnerships, approximately 60 per cent of alumni have found jobs in beauty parlours, many of which are nationally recognised chains; the remaining work mainly as freelancers or micro-entrepreneurs.

6. Discovering Hands- Training Center for Visually Impaired Women

7. Vocational Training for Women

Name of the Company: Sterlite Technologies Limited

Location: Maharashtra

Sterlite Technologies Limited in alignment with the Government of India’s Skill India Mission set up the Jeewan Jyoti Women Empowerment Institute in 2014 at Ambavane in Velhe near Pune. The institute conducts vocational training on nursing, computer operations, data entry, tailoring, fashion designing and basic beauty culture. It has improved the socio-economic status of women from 93 villages in and around Velhe to date. It has also taken steps to reduce poverty by providing its students with employment opportunities to enhance their livelihoods.

9. m-bachat

Name of the Company: Sasken Technologies Limited

Sasken is partnering with SEWA, an organization devoted to empowering underprivileged women by enabling them to become self-sufficient. A critical part of sustainable development is the financial independence of women. For the same, the company's engineers worked relentlessly to create and implement ‘m-Bachat’ (Sasken digital Transaction Enablement Platform). The system is operational in eight districts of Gujarat, and the field experience has been both overwhelming and humbling. ‘m-Bachat’ helps enhance trust amongst all the stakeholders of the micro banking system, thereby playing an important role in abetting the wider adoption of formal banking systems. The solution has been built leveraging Sasken’s strengths in mobility, Android devices, and computing domains. The application supports an intuitive bilingual user interface that can be used readily by women with low computer literacy.

10. Livelihood Enhancement Project for Women

Location: Gujarat

Apollo Tyres Limited's project is supporting women and farmer dependent on agriculture as a source of livelihood. The initiative focuses on supporting farmers by training them on modern techniques and ways to increase agricultural productivity that would lead to improved agricultural practices and better crop yield. Basic training related to seed selection, preparation of land, soil testing, organic compost making, methods of irrigation, kitchen gardening practices and others is delivered.The project also offers services related to livestock care and management. A total of 1,393 women farmers were outreached under sustainable agriculture initiative through training.
