Schoolkids work out solutions to common problems
Rural schools in Aurangabad district have taken to new ways to encourage children to think. Ten schools were picked for special appreciation in this regard and honoured at a ceremony on Saturday at MGM Rukmini Auditorium.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, CanPack Group and NGO Centre for Applied Research and People’s Engagement (Carpe) introduced the concept of Design for Change in 2,100 schools under Zilla Parishad Aurangabad with cooperation of ZP CEO Pavneet Kaur. The programme is also followed in 500 schools in Jalna district, with Jalna ZP CEO Neema Arora also aiding the process.
Under Design for Change, children are provided a problem solving toolkit that helps them identify common problems and discuss solutions within an existing framework. The NGO says the exercise encourages children to find solutions to problems they face in their daily lives. Over the last two years, as many as 323 stories of problem solving were collected from schools across the district.
During Saturday’s programme, participating students were celebrated for putting their innovative thinking to action. Among the solutions that received adulation were a hand-wash station set up to promote hygiene among students by Zilla Parishad Primary School Shivani Paithan, establishment of a savings bank by ZP primary school Borgaon
Arj Phulambri, utilisation of waste water by ZP primary school Palkhed Vaijapur, transformation of unattractive classroom by Parvati Kanya Vidyalaya Aurangabad and initiation of music classes and setting up art gallery by ZP school in Sillod.
