The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) based in Paris. Its declared purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through educational, scientific, and cultural reforms in order to increase universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
About the Grant:
The World Heritage Fund which is a combined effort of UNESCO and World Heritage Convention provides about US$4 million annually to support activities requested by States Parties in need of international assistance. International Assistance under the World Heritage Convention is a financial assistance granted to the States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, in order to help them protect the cultural or natural heritage sites inscribed on the World Heritage List or on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
Who can apply?
- All States Parties to the World Heritage Convention are eligible in principle.
- Individuals, foundations, IGOs and NGOs are not eligible for submitting International Assistance requests under the World Heritage Fund.
Which projects can be funded?
Priority is given to the most threatened properties. International Assistance under the World Heritage Fund can support projects falling under one of the following three categories:
- Emergency Assistance
- Conservation and Management
- Preparatory Assistance
How to apply?
International Assistance requests must be transmitted by a State Party National Commission for UNESCO or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, or an appropriate governmental Department or Ministry. Individuals who do not represent one of these bodies are therefore not entitled to submit requests for International Assistance
Application Deadline: For funding in 2020, the deadline for submission is 31 October 2019.
