Position: Intern, Free Bus Travel for Women Project
This research study is about Delhi women’s and men’s urban transport mobility and about women’s safety while traveling using public transport. Women in Delhi generally travel less than men, and sexual harassment of women in public spaces, including on public transit, is considered widespread. The government of Delhi will implement a policy to make bus travel free for women starting late August or early September 2019. This policy is the first of its kind at this scale anywhere in the world and is a part of the Delhi government’s effort to improve safety in public spaces for women. One of the motivations of the current policy is that increasing the number of women who travel by bus will have knock-on effects on safety because women experience “safety in numbers” and often report feeling safer when surrounded by more women. This study aims to measure the impact of the policy on women and men’s mobility, perceived safety of urban travel, and other travel attributes, such as bus crowding.
