The  Master of Arts (Development Studies) programme throws light on the historical changes in the configuration of the state, markets, social institutions and civil society and their increasing consequences on developing societies, such as India. This programme equips students to develop critical perspectives in the analysis of development experiences and their effects on society, especially on the vulnerable, disadvantaged and marginalised sections and the natural environment. It introduces the students to various experiences in development, and forges an understanding of democratic, participatory and inclusive public policies. It develops the expertise of students in methodologies and skills for development research, and in programme planning, management and evaluation.

Spread over two years (four semesters), the programme offers students a wide range of courses, both basic and elective, and a research project experience. The faculty for this programme are drawn from multiple disciplines, such as economics, sociology, political science, psychology, geography, women’s studies, media studies and policy studies. Students who graduate with this degree find their professional career in academic institutions pursuing inter-disciplinary research and teaching in development studies; in civil and allied administrative services of the government; in development-facilitating organisations; in the corporate sector; in research consultancy firms; and in development journalism.

Minimum Educational Qualification:

a) Candidates should have successfully completed Bachelor's Degree of minimum of 3 years duration or its equivalent (under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1 year bridge course pattern of study or any other pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15 years formal education) from a university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. Some Masters Degree programmes will have additional/specific eligibility requirements. Candidates are advised to refer to programme specific eligibility criteria (given in the Table below) for more details and ensure that they satisfy such specific eligibility criteria.

b) Candidates who will successfully complete, in all respects, all the requirements of their final year eligible degree (including all examinations and internships, if applicable) by Wednesday, June 5, 2019, are also eligible to apply.

c) Those candidates who are eligible to apply, but cannot submit the degree certificate and grade/mark sheet at the time of admission are required to submit these latest by September 30, 2019, failing which their provisional admission would stand automatically cancelled without any further reference to the candidate. The onus will be on the candidate to submit the degree/provisional degree and grade/mark sheet by September 30, 2019. No further extension of date will be allowed under any circumstances.

d) At the time of applying candidates studying in 3 year degree progremme should have passed in all the subjects for the 1st to 4th semesters and candidates studying in 4 year degree progrmmes should have passed in all the subjects for 1st to 6th semester.

How to Apply?

General Instructions about applying:

  • Candidates can apply for a maximum of three programmes across any two of the TISS Campuses and other Centre locations. They are advised to make their choice of programmes carefully after reading the programme descriptions. Change of programmes will not be allowed once admission is completed.
  • Candidates are requested to carefully read through the eligibility criteria mentioned here before filling up the form.
  • Unemployed candidates, whose parent’s / guardian’s annual income from all the sources for the Financial Year 2017-18 is less than Rs.2.5 Lakhs for SC/ST and Rs.1 lakh for OBC(NC) are required to pay Rs.250/- as Concessional Application Fee for each programme. However, they should upload the necessary certificates.
  • Candidates have to upload/attach relevant certificates strictly in the format mentioned here. Please refer to Table 1 for ‘Certificates / Documents to be uploaded'. The Institute also takes steps to have the Caste/Tribe/Non-creamy layer/ Income certificates verified by the competent authorities before PIT-PI and post-admission and those found to have submitted manipulated certificates at any stage of their study, will be asked to leave the programme.
