About the Organization

As the world began to recover from the devastation of World War II, many post-colonial countries in Asia and the Pacific began the arduous process of redefining themselves as independent nations. As a forum for regional collaboration, the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) was established in Shanghai to focus on economic development and post-war reconstruction. As time moved on, ECAFE extended its membership and formed institutions key to the continued growth of the region such as the Asian Development Bank, Asian Highway Network and the Mekong Committee.

About the Course

This self-paced course was developed for those who want to learn more about how to localize the SDGs to sustainably manage natural resources in cities. The main course purpose is to support cities in their actions to localize the SDGs through Sustainable Urban Resource Management.

This eLearning course was developed for the "Integrating the SDGs into Local Action in Support of the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Asia and the Pacific" project by UN ESCAP in partnership with UN-Habitat. The project aims to strengthen local government and key urban stakeholders’ capacity to implement the 2030 Agenda in the area of urban resource management by supporting the processes of collaborative and adaptive urban governance through multi-stakeholder coalitions, integrated analysis and planning through systems approaches, and evidence-based decision-making using data, information, analysis and dissemination. UN ESCAP and UN-Habitat invited secondary cities and towns in Asia and the Pacific to join the project through a Call for Expression of Interest and five pilot cities were chosen through a competitive process. The cities are Battambang (Cambodia), Naga City (Philippines), Nadee (Thailand), Nasinu (Fiji), and Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia). This course was developed to ensure knowledge, learning resource and lesson learned gathered during the course of the project and across pilot cities could be shared with other cities in Asia and the Pacific and to facilitate local government capacity building on the topic of sustainable urban resource management.
