Environmental and climate change reporting is now more urgent than ever, but journalists face myriad and mounting challenges in covering these topics. The media industry is in crisis, and misinformation is on the rise. Reporters working for cash-strapped news agencies often don't have the resources to research a story properly; freelancers, even less so. That’s where EJN comes in.

About the Event

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites communicators to join a workshop on renewable energy in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, from August 21-23, 2025. The workshop is primarily for communicators based in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. Interested communicators based in other states are also welcome to apply.

Tamil Nadu continues to be one of India’s front-runner states in the pace of its renewable energy (RE) rollout—second in wind energy with 11.75 gigawatts (GW) installed and fourth in solar power with 10.30 GW installed as of April 2025. RE accounts for 59% of the state’s total installed power generation capacity, according to the Central Electricity Authority and India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The state is also fourth in India in terms of electricity demand.

The state government formed the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) in 2024. The same year, it unveiled the Tamil Nadu Repowering, Refurbishment, Life Extension policy to help wind farms, which followed the 2023 MNRE National Repowering and Life Extension Policy.

How have these changes affected RE development in a state that is crucial to meet India’s goal of installing 500 GW of RE by 2030? Do RE entrepreneurs now receive the cooperation they need from state government-run organizations when it comes to the procurement of permissions necessary to operate and timely payments for the purchase of electricity? Are they better supported to upgrade their wind turbines—many of which are over 30 years old—with newer models?

And what role can communicators play in informing the public of the promises and benefits of a clean energy future—and the challenges that remain to be resolved?

To discuss these and related issues, EJN is organizing a three-day workshop primarily for communicators based in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. Selected communicators will have the opportunity to learn from researchers, industry experts, entrepreneurs and communities to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the various aspects related to the growth and adoption of renewable energy in the state and in the country.

The workshop will be held in Tiruchirappalli from August 21-23, 2025.

• Applications are open to communicators based in India from print, online, radio and television outlets. Priority will be given to applications from Tamil Nadu and  candidates associated with media outlets with large audiences in the state. Secondary preference will be given to communicators from neighboring states.
• The organizers will cover the cost of travel, accommodation and meals for selected participants.
• The workshop will include a field trip to a relevant location.
• We especially encourage women and early- and mid-career professionals to apply.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Commit to attending all days of the workshop.
• Have some experience reporting in one or more of the following areas:
• Energy
• Environment
• Business
• Science
• Understand and be able to communicate in English and/or Tamil.
• Demonstrate an interest in renewable energy issues.
• Permit republication by the organizers of any output as a result of participation in the workshop.
