Job Description

We are looking to recruit a Lead who will lead the Climate Risks and Adaptation portfolio by leading and supporting in fund-raising, research, management, and expanding of the exciting work undertaken by the Climate change and sustainability practice of IPE Global especially around low carbon pathways and climate adaptation. She/he will primarily be responsible for portfolio development which includes gaining early business insights, identifying opportunities, leading proposal writing, setting up teams upon win for implementation, and providing oversight for the successful delivery of the project.

The Lead will work with and mentor a team of young and energetic development professionals. The work might require frequent field visits and coordination with various stakeholders. She/he will have to perform primary and secondary data collection and analysis. She/he should be equipped to perform and should have knowledge on Contribute to research including energy-economy modelling, development of sectoral roadmaps, policy analysis, and thematic studies on topics such as just energy transition, climate resilience, and low-carbon technology impacts.

The Climate Change and Sustainability Practice’s Climate Risks and Adaptation vertical focuses on enhancing the preparedness and climate action capacities of governments, response agencies, volunteers, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, communities, and other traditional and non-traditional actors within the Disaster Risk Management and Climate Resilience ecosystem. Central to this approach is the use of hyper-granular climate risk assessments and allied analytics, which enable targeted decision-making and context-specific interventions. It underscores the importance of locally led adaptation strategies, ensuring that climate action is rooted in community priorities and realities.

Job Responsibilities

Climate Risk and Adaptation Portfolio Management & Expansion (55%)

  • Lead the development of annual, quarterly, and monthly work plans for assigned programs in consultation with the project teams and partners.
  • Lead the management with country program teams, consultants, interns, and partners on the timely implementation of program activities according to the agreed work plans.
  • Undertake research and development of technical reports and documents, concept notes, and consolidate inputs from consultants, program partners, and stakeholders in consultation with the country program managers and the regional team.
  • Identifying new business opportunities within India and South Asia, Africa in developing leads, and  contacting potential donors.
  • Keeping up to date with trends within the sector, undertaking outreach activities, generating reports, and presenting an analysis of business development progress.
  • Expanding on Climate Change and Sustainability’s current work on climate risks and adaptation, identify growth opportunities in close partnership with team leaders and senior management. Contribute to research including hazard, climatological and meteorological modelling, development of sectoral roadmaps, disaster management plans, policy analysis, and thematic studies on topics in and around climate resilience.
  • Developing proposals and networking to expand the climate adaptation portfolio to other regional countries.
  • Draft and finalize SoWs, ToRs, MoUs, and other related administrative documents for the consultants, sub-awardees, and partnerships.
  • Draft regular progress reports and updates to be submitted to the donor agencies and partners.
  • Formulate and develop new proposals on climate adaptation workstreams and search for funding opportunities, avenues, and partnerships to mobilize resources.
  • Be an “ambassador” for the practice in relevant conferences, workshops, training programme  be seen as a thought-leader in the area of climate resilience
  • Supervise the program management team to monitor the performance targets against the agreed M&E and work plans and report the progress promptly.
  • Draft monthly, quarterly, biannual, and annual progress reports are being submitted to the donors and the partner agencies.
  • Draft and edit technical reports, special reports, and other related program documents.
  • Guide the development of background documents and toolkits, including social media toolkits for the programs, to support advocacy and communication outreach.
  • Work with the Practice Mentor on specific research projects such as sector-level risk assessments under climate extremes, mainstreaming climate finance for mitigation and adaptation, climate security-related issues, cross-sectoral impacts of climate such as water, agriculture, energy efficiency, etc.

Thematic Leadership and Resource Mobilisation through Research, Information and Knowledge Management  (35%):

  • Lead the sub-thematic area of Climate Risks & Adaptation in the CCS Practice and develop proposals, programs, and Theory of Change.
  • Work closely with the Practice Mentor to identify development partners and search for partnership avenues.
  • Support  in mobilising resources to continue program scale-ups and scale-outs and design new programs.
  • Guide the geographic expansion and scale-up of climate risks and resilience programmes in the priority strategic countries.
  • Work closely with state governments to develop integrated energy, environment and water policies with climate at its core
  • Generate and pursue independent and original research ideas
  • Develop plans for research projects and outline research procedures to be followed
  • Extrapolate and verify data given by research analysts/programme associates, evaluate, organise and edit the data into comprehensive standard report forms
  • Utilise internal and external databases and other research tools to create value-added research data
  • Travel to project sites, when required, to conduct interviews or collect data for different research projects
  • Lead the coordination of stakeholder outreach by planning and writing content for media, social media, and events.
  • Publish research publications, thematic studies, climate resilience roadmaps, policy briefs, and blogs on topics related to long-term climate risks pathways climate strategies, among others
  • Leveraging his/her domain expertise in finance to drive the CCS practice’s international portfolio on climate risks and adaptation
  • Work in close coordination with project teams and undertake quality delivery.
  • Expand the Climate Risks and Adaptation team by assisting in hiring the right set of people at a Research Analyst and Sr. Analysts level to drive the strategy and execute the plan Oversee routine project management activities, including reviewing and submitting project reports to donors, developing budgets and work plans, and backstop operations as needed.
  • Build, structure, and develop knowledge to share internally, within the organization, and at the ecosystem level

Leadership and Mentoring (10%)

  • Manage a team of multi-disciplinary team of Analysts and Associate Managers on a day-to-day basis
  • Assist Senior Management and consultants with financial reporting and budgeting for specific projects
  • Support cross-sectoral teams to build various multi-disciplinary portfolios around climate change
  • Perform and design field surveys not limited to questionnaire designing, coordinating with field staffs
  • Motivate, guide and mentor junior team members to help them deliver at their best.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Environment Studies, Energy Studies, Resource Economics, International development, or other relevant field with at least 07 years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 4-5 years of professional experience in program management, advocacy, knowledge management, communication, etc., in Climate Finance or a related field is required; a minimum of 4 years of experience in international organizations or IGOs is required.
  • Experience in financial services, management consulting, international non-profit, or development financial institution is mandatory. Analytical capacity and the demonstrated ability to process, analyze, and synthesize complex, technical information into user-friendly formats and products.
  • Background in Financial sector - Banking/capital markets/insurance is mandatory
  • Understanding of Banking or capital markets or insurance regulations is mandatory
  • Sound understanding of energy transition, knowledge of public finance in the Indian context preferred.
  • Experience in undertaking stakeholder consultations with public and private sector entities.
  • Microsoft office skills.

Professional Attributes

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience developing multi-year proposals for bilateral/multilateral organisations, foundations and philanthropies. A good grasp of the Climate Change sector is a must. 
  • Hands-on experience in structuring commercial proposals.
  • Experience and knowledge of climate change policy and program development, especially with low carbon and decarbonisation announcements and regulations demonstrated experience working with government agencies, stakeholder groups, and others, and experience with and understanding of climate financial markets.
  • Experience working with Governments and international aid agencies. 
  • Experienced in working with data and comfortable using Excel spreadsheets as well as online data capture and reporting tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Having previous experience in devising and backing projects on strong knowledge of (a) climate change science, (b) the policy/regulatory environment of climate change, and (c) how leading businesses are responding.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a commitment to mentoring and team development.
  • Demonstrable team management experience and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult, influence and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Project management expertise, including the management of large project teams.
